Ariva's POV
"And she's like, 'Big brother! I wanna pway! Pwease? We havwn't pwayed in a while! And your always so buswy! At lweast, that's what you say! Pwease, pwease, pwease, pwease?!'" he huffs. "With her annoying, cute puppy-dog eyes."
I laugh. "C'mon, she can't be that bad."
"Yes she can! Wait–uh! Have you met Jess? She is the most annoying little sis in the universe!"
"Well, thank God I'm an only child!"
"Lucky." he mutters. His notification bell rings and he checks his phone.
"Who is it?"
"My girlfriend..." he murmurs, gaze fixed on the message.
I stop dead in my tracks. And then I laugh. "Yeah, right. Very funny."
He stops walking and turns to me, a brow raised. "I'm not joking."
"W-What? What d'you mean your not joking? You've always said you'll never get a girlfriend!"
"Well, people change. Besides, why do you care?"
"I... I don't care..."
Then there's a mischievous glint in his eyes. He walks up to me, slides a hand around my waist, pulls me close so that out bodies are pressed together and tucks a loose strand of my hair behind my ear. Our faces–our lips–are probably exactly three inches apart and my heart beats ten times faster, in the process, skipping a beat or two. Or three. Or– okay, five.
"Do you care because... you like me?" His voice is a deep whisper.
My breath clogs in my throat. "I... I..."
"Just tell me and..." Our noses are touching now, his breath warm against my cheek.
His lips become dangerously close to my mine, at least one inch apart. My brain wants to stay put but my body has other thoughts. I find myself leaning into him, my hands clutching his neck as the distance between out lips becomes half an inch.
As soon as that happens, he jerks back, causing me to stumble forwards. I regain my balance and place my hand on my neck, try to calm myself down. Then, we're both staring at each other awkwardly, thinking about what just happened.
I've never thought of him as more than a friend. Never thought of him as anything more than a loved one, but my heart thinks something else...?
He runs his hand up and down his neck before a wicked grin breaks his face. "Your heart beat's rising by the second and I do remember you desperately clutching my neck... You do like me."
"Uh–I–I do not like you! You're weird, annoying and you always make me late for school! And you're disgusting!" I try to do my best 'offended' voice impression.
He laughs. "Yeah. That's what you think." he pauses. "You know, you could just–"
"Joel! Joel!" a high pitch voice shouts. "Oh my God, I've been looking for you everywhere!"
A girl with a pink neck-length haircut wearing a white crop top and a pink short skirt wraps her body around Joel's and starts kissing him. He starts kissing back as I just stand there totally confused–and annoyed.
This is his girlfriend? And, do I know her? Pink skirt, pink hair, cheery personality? C'mon, Joel! This is who you picked? Preppy girl? I could do so much better! Wait, what am I saying? I wouldn't do better because I don't like him!
Joel whispers something to her and they stop kissing as she turns to me. "Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry! I didn't see you there! I also didn't know I was interrupting a convers–" she studies me for a second. "Hey! It's you, Ariva! I haven't seen you in while!" She then hugs me.
I freeze. Her strong perfume fills my nose and I immediately start coughing a bit. "Uhh, do I know you?"
"Seriously? We've known each other since kindergarten."
I raise a brow.
"The girl who drew the best painting? Selena?"
My mind stays blank but I fake recognition. "Oh. Selena... long time no see..."
She rolls her eyes–uh? Excuse me? Your the one who just pops out of nowhere and starts making out with my BFF–and turns to Joel. "So, where're we going?"
I look from her too Joel. "We?"
"I asked her to come with us to the cinema." He smiles at her.
"And you didn't care to tell me?" I grit my teeth.
"You got a problem with it?" He grins.
"I–wha–" I grunt as I start walking to the cinema.

Why did I pick a romance movie? And why did I sit next to Selena? Every time something sad happened to the couple, she would cry and start to softly kiss Joel while he starts whispering things like, "It's okay, baby." or "We'll never be like them, baby.".
And when there were cute, romantic scenes, Selena would start purring and start saying stuff like, "He'll never be as cute ad you, Joel." and "Your the hottest of all the boys in the world and I don't know why she said he his.". She would flirt, he would soothe and then they would just kiss.
And I'm pretty sure everyone in the cinema sighed of relief when the movie ended. I know I did.
I immediately rushed home after the movie, dropped my bag on the nearest table and sunk into the couch.
I spotted mom sitting in a seat near the counter top.
"Hey! You're back! I missed you sooo much!" My head laid upside down on the couch arm.
She stays silent. Odd. She's never silent.
"Where's dad?"
"I don't know."
"What? Where could he have gone then?"
"I don't know." Her voice is cold, full of anger and hatred. Is it directed at me or father?
"Are you mad at him?"
"Furious."
"Why?"
"Go to bed, Ariva."
What? What am I, eight? "If you've forgotten, I'm sixteen."
"I know. Go to bed." Her tone is urgent.
"Fine. I'll go to bed."
