Where In The World Is Wei Ying?

Wei WuXian rolled over in bed, scrubbing the heels of his hands over sleep-crusted eyes.

"Lan Zhan!" he whined. "Why are you bustling and busy so early? Come back to bed and cuddle your Wei Ying."

"Cannot," came a low voice from the main living area of the Jingshi. "I want to finish tidying up before the morning meal. Wei Ying may sleep a little longer."

Grumbling quietly under his breath about neglectful husbands and early birds with a disgusting taste for revolting worms, Wei WuXian dozed off once more. The soundtrack of quiet movements and the light sound of objects being replaced in their proper locations was soothing in its own way; daily evidence that Lan WangJi was in the next room, available at a single call, always on hand. Here.

The second waking was more satisfactory. Soft, warm lips pressed gently to Wei WuXian's and lingered sweetly. A nuzzle behind one ear, with a light nip, and Wei WuXian's unconscious moved from assuming dreams to revelling in the knowledge that this was reality.

"Ah, Lan Zhan, is it really time to get up?" Wei WuXian leaned his head over, the long line of his neck tempting for more attention from Lan WangJi.

Lan WangJi kissed Wei WuXian once more and sat back with a fond look.

"Wei Ying needs to rise. It is time for the morning meal, and I have meetings all day afterward with the visiting clans."

Wei WuXian pouted. "Why, Lan Zhan? Run away with me for the day and play...those stupid clan leaders are just rehashing old grievances dressed in new clothes. They were supposed to be done three days ago and gone home already. They don't deserve the beautiful HanGuang-Jun's attention. Their nitpicking and grousing are making you old before your time."

Wei WuXian looked with genuine concern at his husband. Indeed, Lan WangJi's golden eyes had dark circles beneath, like shadows from sunshine, and he looked - clearly to Wei WuXian, if not to anyone else - very weary.

"I can't do that, Wei Ying," admonished Lan WangJi. "It would not be seemly for the Chief Cultivator to refuse to hear them, however much they are going over old ground. I will mark the juniors' night hunt reports in the breaks we take, and I'll be home this evening to spend time with you as always. I will not neglect Wei Ying, no matter how busy I get."

Wei WuXian looked up at his husband, taking in his sweet, devoted face, even as he took note of the signs of exhaustion so evident to him. Lan WangJi was wearing himself out. These minor Clans and large Families had descended upon Cloud Recesses a full week ago and their gripes and groans were not yet fully aired? All day in meetings, scrambling to fulfill his Sect duties between Chief Cultivator responsibilities, and all other spare moments caught in the maelstrom of mischief he had married; it was no wonder Lan WangJi had no opportunity to recharge himself. When has my husband last had any peace and quiet to himself? mused Wei WuXian. He needs solitude to refresh himself. We've all asked too much for too long... my poor love!

Wei WuXian rose and washed his face before the two men sat over the morning meal together. Wei WuXian was perhaps a little more solicitous than usual, ensuring that Lan WangJi's tea cup was always full. He passed tantalizing bites to Lan WangJi's mouth with his chopsticks, biting his own lip when these were accepted and taken between the fine peach lips Wei WuXian admired so greatly.

Eventually the morning meal was finished and tidied away. Lan WangJi departed to collect their visitors from the Yashi before escorting them to the Main Hall where he would pick up his Chief Cultivator duties. Meanwhile Wei WuXian dressed then turned to his desk in the Jingshi. Set beside Lan WangJi's own desk, it provided a place for Wei WuXian to work on his concepts before retreating to his workroom on the back of the Jingshi to make practical trials. Talismans needed to be carefully planned and researched before risking activation. Before long Wei WuXian was engrossed in his work, refining a radical here, contemplating an adjustment in tone there... the morning slipped past unheeded until a knock at the Jingshi entrance startled Wei WuXian and resulted in ink being spilt over the page he was working on and thence to the floor.
