Run

Seraphine wakes up when she hears someone unlock the basement door. She quickly sits up and shivers when she looks at the rug that must have once again slipped off while she slept.

Her father walks through the door, his expression blank. Seraphine tenses, not knowing what to expect. Her father's eyes travel down her body before his face contorts. He grabs her injured wrist and yanks it, causing her to jerk forward. She groans, and stray hairs fall on her face.

Seraphine tries to yank her arm back, but her father's grip is firm. His face goes red, and the veins in his forehead bulge.

"What the hell is this?" He yells.

Seraphine spits, "Are you kidding me? You lock me in this basement, leaving me to freeze, and you're worried about my physical state?"

Her father shakes with anger before he slaps Seraphine across the face. Seraphine gasps; her look of anger turns into one of fear. Her pale eyes widen, and her lips part.

"How fucking DARE you disrespect me," He hollers, "I should have gotten rid of you a long time ago." With that, he shoves her backwards, causing her to painfully hit the ground.

He doesn't look back as he slams the basement door and leaves. Seraphine clutches her wrist, and her breaths become short.

Seraphine sits there in silence for around thirty minutes before she hears someone coming down the stairs. She narrows her eyes as the doorknob twists, and two figures enter the room.

One is her father, and the other is a dapper young man. He is incredibly tall, and his face is expressionless. His posture is impeccable, and his hands rest over his cane.

Seraphine's father smiles, "This is Doctor Deverell Bromes," he motions his hand to the man, and he stares at Seraphine in response to the introduction, "You'll be staying with him from now on. Seeing as you're sick, he'll be the one to take care of you."

Seraphine's eyes widen, and she looks at the man again; his mouth quirks up into the smallest of smiles, but it's not because he's friendly.

She doesn't know what to say or what to do. She looks at the floor and cowers. Then, she hears someone coming towards her; Doctor Deverell.

Before she can say anything, he grabs her wrist and starts tugging her up the stairs, "I see you are uninterested in pleasantries, come along then," he grumbles.

"Wait, sir! It's not as my father says. There is nothing wrong with me." She tries to pull her hand back and fails.

Deverell says nothing as he drags her through the house and then the front door. Her eyes burn at the sudden burst of light.

The sky is blue and clear, and in front of them is a black horse with a small wooden wagon attached to the saddle. Fear wells up in Seraphine's throat.

"Run," a soft voice says into Seraphine's ear. Before Seraphine can process it, the voice speaks again, yelling this time, "RUN!"

She waits until the doctor releases her hand to open the carriage door for her, then she makes a run for it. She can hear her father, and the doctor yell and chase after her.

She keeps looking forward and sees the lush forest. It's the only place she has a chance of escaping. The problem is she knows she'll never make it, but she keeps running despite that.

She has almost reached the forest when a hand grabs her shoulder and shoves her to the ground. She screams and tries to crawl away.

Deverell scowls before grabbing at her, Seraphine's father not too far behind him. "Yeesh, little missy, you sure got some fight in ya."
