1 - Unexpected Attention

As I walked the halls on the first day of school, I couldn't help but feel that the path I have walked so many times before had changed. It was a whole new atmosphere. Growing over the summer and being able to make my own decisions and for the first time in eighteen years, I was taking control.

But even with the newfound perspective on life, some things never change. Like my interactions with him. Even before I gained this newfound confidence, our relationship has always been the same. Even though to outsiders, our relationship seemed unethical; it was my one saving grace. Knowing that I would see him every day brought me a sense of joy. It gave me something to look forward to ... and it still does. And the fact that I have him for two periods this year makes it so much sweeter.

I walked to his classroom with no hesitation, knowing the way like the back of my hand. He wasn't here yet, but that's not surprising. He always came into first hour ten minutes late, and it would seem that he is not interested in breaking that chain of habit this year. Sitting down in my usual seat at the front of the classroom, I look around to see who is taking the class this year and my eyes clash with Anthony's. I give him a small smile before turning back to face the front of the classroom. Anthony is the hottest guy in my class, heck, probably in the whole school. Meeting his gaze filled me with nervousness, and the heat creeping onto my cheeks definitely made that fact obvious.

Getting onto my phone to pass the time, I drown out the noise of the incoming students. Everyone always says that patience is a virtue, but I sadly lack it. Scrolling through tik tok fills the majority of the time leading up to the first bell that will start class. Well, I guess it wouldn't be starting class, it would just be giving a ten-minute heads-up. With one minute left of the ten-minute mark, my attention is drawn to the side of me when a shadow falls upon me. Anthony. Sheesh, two interactions in less than ten minutes? That has got to be a new record.

Anthony casually leans against my desk before flashing me his perfect smile.

"Hey Ellie, I meant to give this back to you." He hands me the pink pen that I had lent him last school year.
"Oh," I awkwardly laughed, "I completely forgot that you had that. I nervously grab the pen, making our hands touch for longer than they should. Anthony looked at our hands and smiled. Not gonna lie, it was delightful to see his beautiful face smiling at me like he wanted to touch me.

Enchanted for a moment, I heard the heavy classroom door open. In came a 6'1, strikingly handsome man. He wore a button-down shirt fitting perfectly across his broad shoulders and just tight enough to see the outline of his biceps. I caught myself envisioning unbuttoning his shirt as he looked down at me with his intense blue eyes. "Good morning guys and girls." Our eyes met and I was taken away. His five o'clock shadow, his hair, and his body bewitched me. It was like there were no other people on the planet but the two of us. Me and Mr. Derek Koester.

I watched as he unpacked his bag and began to speak about the plans for the school year. His deep voice was hypnotizing, all I could do was aimlessly gaze at him. I heard a soft, "Hey," coming from my left. I had completely forgotten that Anthony was sitting right next to me. "Can I borrow that pen again?" I giggled, "You gave it back to me after months just to borrow it again?" He looked deeply into my eyes, "Gives me a reason to talk to you."

"Come on guys, interrupting class on the first day?" Mr. Koester said, crossing his herculean arms. "My bad, Koester. I was just asking for a pen," Anthony explained. "I have plenty of pens and pencils on my desk you can borrow without distracting Ellie." I melted when he said my name.

The bell rang and everyone started gathering their things. I felt eyes on me and when I looked up I realized Mr. Koester was coming towards me. I shyly smiled as I held my books against my chest. He looked at the door shut behind the last person leaving the classroom and turned to me. "Do I need to sit Anthony somewhere else so he doesn't distract you? I need all your attention on me," He said smoothly. My heart was racing, he was standing so close to me. "Oh, it's fine. He doesn't bother me. I'm always looking at you anyways!" He glanced down and chuckled. "I mean, like, I'm always paying attention." I tried to laugh off the fact that I had just admitted to staring at him. He smirked in the most attractive way humanly possible, "Go on to your next class. You don't want to be tardy on your first day."
