Together we strode across the schools front lawn towards the “popular crowd”. a few girls smiled at me and i politely smiled back. some guys waved to me and bro-hugged luke as we walked past.

“Hey!” Alyssa chirped as we reached them, Tyler and Clay smiled, Nikki inspected her nails looking bored. ‘Well let her be that way.’ i thought.

“You ride with luke?” clay asked me nodding towards luke who was talking to Alyssa.

“Yeah, he lives a few houses down from me.” i told him. I took in his blue holister shirt and blue jeans. He was definitely cute, and everyone knew it. Nikki eyed us from the corner of her eye.

“I know he told me, so did you get your schedule?” he asked. he had his hands in his pockets and rocked back and forth on his toes.

“Yes... my first class is french...” i trailed off looking for luke hoping he would come over here before this conversation got awkward. he didn't.

“bien moi aussi,” he smiled.

“Huh?”

“i said ‘well so do i’,” he clarified and started laughing at me.

“I said i was taking french, not that i knew french!” i told him and he laughed some more. Luke obviously saw him laughing and chose that time to come over.

“Whats so funny?” he asked clay smiling.

“Addison is quite skilled in french.” Clay said doubling over with laughter, i just stood there blushing a bright shade of red.

“Ahhh,” Luke said, “Its okay, clays like one of those people that are so smart its scary,” He told me winking. Clay finally quit laughing to give him a mock-glare.

“Well come on lets get to class,” clay said grabbing my backpack off my shoulder and putting it on his own. I thought i saw lukes jaw twitch but i wasn't for sure so i waved bye to him and Alyssa and followed clay off to french.

We finally made it through the crowded halls to a big orange door that had a sign on the door saying, ‘Bienvenue!’ even i knew that meant ‘Welcome!’

Clay opened the door for me and followed me into a big classroom with about 10 desks.

“Why are there so little desks?” i asked clay.

“You have a partner and you share a desk with them.” he said walking over to a desk in the back row. i hesitantly followed him.

“Well who's your partner?” i asked hoping i didn't get stuck with someone completely terrible.

“A guy named Morrison from the football team. But if you want i’ll ask if i can switch partners and be yours.” he said smiling and putting my backpack on the table. he also pulled out a seat for me to sit next to him, but i didn't.

“No thats fine, maybe i’ll make a new friend i said winking at him playfully and walking up to ask the man, who was the teacher, at the front of the room who i should sit by.

“Oh, your Addison Campbell! Im Mr. Greene and you can take that table next to Clay, Do you know who that is?” he questioned, i nodded and he continued. “Your partner will be...” he grabbed a clipboard on his desk and looked at it for a few seconds before turning back to me. “Nikki Taylor.” My stomach dropped. I started to ask for another partner but the bell rang and kids started pouring into the room, forcing me to take my seat next to Nikki.

“What are you doing?” she asked looking me up and down like i was a bug.

“Being your french partner-thingy.” i stated smiling. i remembered that old saying my dad used to tell me before he passed away. He would always joke, ‘be nice to your enemies, nothing annoys them more.’ i sighed and held back tears, finally Mr. Greene started talking giving me something else to put my mind on.

Nikki tore out a peice of paper from a notebook in her bag and scribbled on it before sliding it in front of me. i slowly picked it up looked at the perfect handwriting.

‘Stay away from Clay.’

I gulped, what was wrong with this girl? there was nothing going on with me and Clay. i decided to ignore the note. i crumpled up the note into a ball and threw it into the trash can. it went in.

“Three Points!” i whisper-yelled in my best announcer voice. out of the corner of my eye i saw that clay saw me do it and started laughing, i smiled at him.

“Something wrong mr. Harris?” Mr. Greene asked eying Clay, i guessed that clays last name was Harris. Clay Harris.

“Nothing at all, Sir,” he said and mr. greene continued on with his lecture. clay winked at me.

i turned around and faced the front of the room, blushing. Out of the corner of my eye i saw Nikki turn red, and clench her jaw tight. I guess  i felt bad for her for a second but the feeling soon pasted when she looked me in the eye and sneered.

Clay didn't like me. did he? no, i pushed the thought out of my head. Of course he didn't. There was obviously something going on with him and Nikki by the way she was always watching him.

The bell rang, signaling class was over.

“I mean it.” Nikki growled before storming out of the room. I just stared after her, what was her problem?

Clay appeared over at my desk. “What was with her?” he asked nodding toward the door, obviously talking about nikki.

“Im not sure,” i said honestly, i decided i wouldn't tell him about what Nikki had wrote me.

“Well don't worry, she’ll warm up to you eventually.” As much as people said that, i didn't believe it. At all.

I had a feeling that nikki would not be ‘warming up’ to anyone.

Least likely me.
