MANY MONTHS LATER...

Sans lay on their couch, he stared at the wall and listened to the same clock ticking. Papyrus walked by him. He wore a long red cape and shiny armor, a red belt twisted around his torso. "leaving so soon?" Sans asked him. "Yes, well, Undyne wants me in the capital today. So the sooner I start out the better. It is quite a ways to go."

"the capital? again? don't tell me you're training more recruits?"

"Yes, more recruit training." Papyrus adjusted his cape.

"why are so many monsters wanting to join the Royal Guard lately? heh. are they all as eager as you were?"

Papyrus let out a sigh. "...Yeah..."

"ok well that didn't sound very convinving." Sans turned his head to look at Papyrus. "they giving you a hard time or something?"

"N-no...not them..." Sans turned on his stomach and stared at papyrus, peeking at him just a little over the arm of the sofa. "But it's nothing I can't handle! Don't worry yourself, brother." Papyrus waved at Sans before turning the door handle. "It'll probably be pretty late when I arrive home so don't wait up. Also don't forget-"

"sentry duty, yeah yeah i know. i'll be there. always am."

Pap sighed at his brother. "Yes...but can you actually stay at your post this time? Doggo claims he often finds your station...vacant."

Sans turned on his head to the side. "i go patrolling, that's all."

"Sans..."

"you should probably get going if you have to go all the way to the capital, dontcha think?"

"Oh! Right you are, brother! Very well, then...I will see you later tonight. I wish you a good day!" Papyrus opened the door and exited.

"yeah...you too, pap..." Sans sighed as he listened to the clock ticking.

"Knock knock."

"who's there?"

"Old lady."

"old lady who?"

"Oh I didn't know you could yodel!"

Sans tried to hold in a laugh, but failed miserably. "oh man...that's terrible!" He sat against one of the pillars next to the ruins door. "Why thank you! But the credit goes to my mom. Haha." Frisk giggled.

"no way! your mom likes jokes!?"

"Right? I found this whole journal of hers full of jokes she's written!"

"oh i have to hear more of them! my dad isn't really much of a-" He interrupted himself at the thought of his dad, the smile on his face completely gone. "...i...i mean...wasn't...really much of a joker..."

On the other side of the door, Frisk's hair grew long. She held her mom's joke book as she talked to Sans. "Hey...wanna know something interesting?"

"what is it?"

"My mom had other kids before me."

"really?"

Sans was quite interested now. "Yeah. Two I think. I don't know what happened to them, though. She never really talks about them. But there's old toys and drawings I found in my room that I can only assume were from her kids. Ans she mentions them a little bit in her joke journal, here."

"maybe whatever happened to them is why she's so protective of you."

"Maybe. It's got me thinking a lot though. About my mom's life...before living here in the ruins. Who she was and what led her here. What she did before she found me. Why one those kids in the drawings I found look like her and who the other kid was..."
