I took a deep breath and stepped into the police station, trying to hide my scowl. I was NOT looking forward to the day, even though I had dreamed of being a police officer for a long time. If only Charlie wasn't going to be there. Then my day would be perfect. Of course though, there she was, as soon as I walked into the waiting room, I found her glaring at me.
Her dark brown hair was combed and she was sitting with her legs crossed and one of her arms hung over the back of her chair. Her gray eyes were narrowed as I noticed that she had brought two bags with her- her lunch bag and her purse- and sat them in either seat next to her. I also noticed that all the other pairs were there already, and that all of them were sitting side by side. All the chairs on that side of the room were occupied besides the ones with her bags, and the only empty seats were on the opposite side of the room.
Talk about dramatic.
I sighed and sat down on the seat across from Charlie, then ignored her and watched the door on the far side of the room for the Chief. I saw her scowl out of the corner of my eye, and the door opened and the five officers in charge of training us entered the room. The other pairs all stood and went to stand in front of their officer, so I did too, and after a moment, Charlie, but she stood as far from me as she could while still standing in front of Officer Lola.
Officer Lola narrowed her eyes at us. "Come with me. You will be teaming up with Officer Farah's pair today, and we will teach you about the traffic laws, and going out on the highway to use a radar speed gun." She spun around and walked toward another officer that was close by, and I followed, with Charlie just behind me but not getting too close. Officer Farah's pair was also a man and woman, but I hadn't been paying attention to what their names were yesterday, since they were picked after me and Charlie, and I spent that time fuming and not listening. The pair nodded politely at me, but I noticed a flicker of uneasiness in the man's eyes, while the woman seemed to be buzzing with excitement, and she was trying to conceal it with a straight face, which didn't seem to fit her very well.
Officer Farah nodded at Officer Lola, and together they walked out of the room with us four behind them, in single file. Charlie managed to push me out of the way and be in the front of the line, and she shot a glare over her shoulder at me. I narrowed my eyes at her and didn't say anything. I did not want to get in trouble on the first day of real work. She walked down the hall with the officers until they went into the locker room, and then the rest of us filed in. Officer Farah led her pair to their locker, and Lola led Charlie and I to ours.
"You will share this locker, as you learned yesterday," Lola said, her face a mask of sternness. "There are two ledges in it, both with hooks on the back, for when you get your duty belt and vest." She opened the locker, and sure enough, it was exactly as she described. "Choose the half that you each want." She looked at us expectantly, and Charlie immediately stepped forward.
"I get the top!" She said, glaring at me. I clenched my fists and narrowed my eyes again.
"Are you stupid? The taller person always gets the top." I said, straightening up. I was 5'10", and she was maybe 5'6". "There's no way you would ever even reach the top hook, while I could easily, mor-" I stopped myself from calling her a moron, knowing that Officer Lola was watching. She clenched her fists, her jaw tightening, and she looked ready to snap a nasty retort, but she glanced at Lola too, and obviously forced herself to relax.
"Fffffine." She hissed. "I'll take the bottom." She immediately stepped forward, shouldering me aside, and set her purse and lunch bag on her ledge. I had only brought a small paper sack of lunch, so I set it on the top ledge. I spotted Officer Farah walking over to us, a mostly stern and slightly puzzled look on her face, and I immediately relaxed. Charlie, however, remained tense, obviously not seeing the other officer coming. She looked startled, and she jumped a bit when Officer Farah spoke.
"Have you been introduced to my pair of recruits?" She asked us. I looked at Charlie when she jumped, and something about how she was startled so easily... I found myself holding back laughter. But I kept a straight face, my eyes darting to the floor a moment, then back to Officer Farah. The moment passed, and I replied.
"No, Officer. May we introduce ourselves?" I asked her, and she nodded, and she waved over her trainees. I glanced over a Charlie again and found that she had composed herself, and her scowl had returned to her face. The man and woman came over, the man slowly and tentatively, the woman practically bounding.
"I am Nyssa! Nice to meet you!" The woman said enthusiastically. She composed herself and nodded politely, obviously hiding a smile. The man dipped his head and stood next to Nyssa.
"Uh... hi. I- I'm Dean. Nice to meet you, I guess." He said quietly, avoiding eye contact.
"I'm Hunter. It's nice to meet you both too." I smiled at them tentatively, glancing at the officers beside us. Both of them looked stern but relaxed. As I looked back toward Nyssa and Dean, I saw a glimpse of Charlie out of the corner of my eye. She was still scowling, but there was another emotion under it that I couldn't identify, something like... confusion? I ignored it though, turning my attention back to Nyssa and Dean.
"I'm Charlie," Charlie, smiling and getting rid of her frown, and speaking nicer than I've ever heard her. "Looking forward to the day?" She asked Nyssa directly, seeming amused.
Nyssa let herself smile. "Yes! I've always wanted to be a police officer, so this is going to be great! I love helping people. And I think that Officer Farah will be the best at training us." She beamed at her trainer, and she responded with a light smile. I glanced at Officer Lola. She seemed to be waiting for Charlie to say something- probably something about how she was going to be a great trainer too. I tried to beat her to it.
"I think Officer Lola will be great too," I said, right as Charlie said, "Officer Lola will be amazing as well." I looked down at Charlie disdainfully but saw that Lola had nodded approvingly. Charlie scowled at me, and Nyssa gave us a questioning look. Even Dean looked puzzled. I shook my head slightly, then turned toward Lola and Farah. "Where do we start?" I asked.
Officer Farah nodded to the other side of the room, where a closet door was. "First, we get you belts and vests." She strolled over to the door and opened it, then handed each of us a empty belt and vest to put on. "The vests are bulletproof," Farah told us. We all put them on, along with the belts. Then Farah gave each of us a few supplies and a walkie-talkie, or as they liked to call them, Police Radios. We fastened them to our our shoulder, and then I noticed a mirror hanging on one side of the room, next to the couch. Curious as to what I looked like, I walked over and looked at myself in the mirror. I looked like a real police officer, aside from the fact that I wasn't wearing the right uniform under the vest and belt. I asked Lola about it, and she said that we would get our new uniforms tonight, and that today we could just be comfortable in our own clothes.
The next thing we were given was a radar speed gun, one for me and one for Dean. Dean looked nervously down at the traffic tool, and held it tentatively, like it would explode if he held it tightly. I smiled reassuringly at him, and he returned a nervous smile. We walked out of the room, with Farah and Lola leading the way, saying that we were going to go out in two police vans to the highway, and teach us how to use the radar speed guns. There were three seats in the front of the van, so Lola, Charlie and I could all fit. Finally, the first mission- the first day of police work- was finally getting interesting.
Hey, Author here. Hope you enjoyed this chapter, it will be continued in the next part lol. I also don't give a crap whether or not I'm right or wrong on how a police van has three seats in the front, it was the only thing I could think of, so if you have an opinion... ok, good for you lol. Alright I will talk next time, toodles.
