'𝔗oday we will be a surprise test. Choose a partner and hurry to a table. Make a potion, surprise me!' Professor Slughorn exclaimed, sitting down on his desk and pulling out a weekly witch.

Y/n tried to get to James but Sirius had gotten him. Peter and Remus sat together. Y/n sighed and sat in the front of the class. 'You?' The girl next to her exclaimed. 'Lily!' Y/n almost jumped.

The both of them had shared classes since first year but Lily was never fond of Y/n's friend which led to the lack of interaction between them.

'Hi' Y/n muttered. 'Hello' Lily sounded skeptical but replied with a shaky smile. 'Which- um- which potion do you wanna make?' Lily asked quietly. 'I don't know' Y/n mumbled. 'How about the shrieking one?' Y/n asked, looking over Lily's shoulder and into her textbook. 'This? Oh, It's easy!' Lily exclaimed. 'Shall we get the ingredients?' Y/n asked. Lily shook her head. 'I'll get them. You get the cauldron going.' She said before rushing to the pantry to get the materials. While Lily did so, Y/n sat their awkwardly, flipping through the textbook and reading the instructions. 

As she did so, Y/n felt a hand run through her hair in the back. It soothed her and only one person had that effect on her. 'Hello, James.' She whispered, leaning  back on her chair so she could hear him better. 'You're sitting with Lily?' He asked in a low tone. Y/n looked to the redhead who was still rummaging through the pantry. 'Clearly.' Y/n said in a slightly annoyed tone. 

It had been 2 week or so since they reached and James had gotten back to his habits where he would talk about was Lily. He was in love. The group understood. But it was getting a bit over. 'Put in a good word for me?' He asked hopefully. Y/n glanced at Lily who seemed to have finished. 'If the topic ever comes up.' Y/n promised. James leaned forward and pressed a quick kiss to Y/n's cheek. 'Thanks.' He whispered. 'You're welcome. Now back off.' She mumbled, her cheeks a bit red, as she sat up straight. 

'You... didn't get the potion going?' Lily asked, tilting her head slightly. 'Oh! God, I'm so sorry Lily, I forgot! I'll do it now!' Y/n exclaimed, looking extremely sorry. She quickly set the cauldron up and it was ready to use in no time. Lily and Y/n worked together, having small talks here and there. After a few minutes, Lily looked over to Y/n, who still had a small frown on her face. Lily sighed, and held Y/n's hand. 'It's no problem, really...' Lily trailed off, not knowing her name. 'Y/n.' she said with a soft smile. 'It's no problem, Y/n. Let it go, we've caught up.' Lily soothed, placing her hand on Y/n's arm. 'It is! I forgot and now we're behind everyone else!' She wailed in a whispery tone. 'No we aren't. Actually, we're quite done.' Lily smiled softly and the both of them looked to the cauldron. The potion was a bright yellow and honestly hurt the girls' eyes slightly. 

'Gimme that bottle.' She pointed to an empty one with a cork. Y/n listened and handed it to the red head. Lily uncorked it and dipped it into the cauldron. While Lily did so, Y/n turned to see how her best friend was doing. James and Sirius we're making a mess. Their cauldron was so full that it over-flowed and was dripping down the table, it was a dark mucus green, which was quite disgusting. 

James whispered random instructions while Sirius added ingredients and followed James' sayings. The both of them stopped and raised their eyes slightly to see Y/n looking them, her face holding disgust and confusion. Both the boys flashed their most charming smiles. 'Hello, sweetheart.' Sirius flirted as Y/n rolled her eyes and returned to where Lily was corking the bottle. 

'And done!' she exclaimed, handing Y/n the bottle for waxing it close and add a paper with their names. Y/n did so and they submitted the bottle. 'Good job, girls! You're the first to finish.' Slughorn praised them. Lily had a proud look on her face while Y/n flushed slightly. 'It was all Lily-' 'Thank you, Sir.' Lily cut Y/n off with a slight nudge. Slughorn smiled at them before walking around the class to see how the rest of them were doing. After he left, Y/n and Lily shared a smile. 'Thanks.; Y/n said, smiling brighter and going back to her bubbly self. 'You're welcome' Lily laughed under her breath.
