YOUR POV
“Y/N”, you heard someone call distantly. The voice sounded familiar. A man’s, deep and sultry. He sounded gorgeous, you thought. “Y/N,” there it was again. What kind of dream was this? You realized it wasn’t a dream suddenly, and opened your eyes, shooting up.
You slammed against the headboard, and heard the wood break. You looked up and saw Alec as well as the Inquisitor staring at you with wide eyes.
“Well, I believe it’s safe to say the rune worked on the girl,” she said, gesturing to the broken headboard behind you. Alec looked at her, then back to you.
“Y/N, are you okay?” He was concerned, this you saw. His brows were creased, a concerned look sporting his features. Still shocked, you just nodded. You looked down, noticing the still red burn in the shape of the strength rune on your arm.
“It’s okay,” Alec said, brushing the hair out of your face. “It’ll go away soon.” The inquisitor gathered her things, looking behind her again before she took her leave.
“It’s safe to say that Y/N here, though not full Shadowhunter, has our abilities. We have no other choice but to begin her training. She is one of us now.”
I looked at Alec, relief but also fear in my eyes. “So I can never return to my mundane life?”
“You are aware of the Shadowhunter world now. It’s too dangerous for those with our abilities to live in the mundane world, even if a warlock would wipe their memory. One of our own grew up that way, and it only endangered her. You’ll be safe here, Y/N. I’ll always protect you,” Alec pressed a kiss to each of your cheeks, smiling at the way they blushed upon his lips making contact.
“I’ll bring you something to eat, your body is likely worn out from the magic. I’ll be right back,” he gave you a curt nod with a gentle smile, exiting the room and closing the door behind him.
You couldn’t believe this. Your father was half Shadowhunter, your uncle full, and you were a quarter? What would have happened if you didn’t have the rune tolerance? Would they have wiped your memory and turned you back to the mundane world? You shuddered at the thought of saying goodbye to Alec. You’d never had much luck with men. They always seemed to hurt you, or you just lost interest after a couple hours. But Alec? He was like … You couldn’t explain it. You never really believed in the concept of soulmates, but with all this magic and myth, you weren’t entirely ruling it out now. You were part Shadowhunter. It was a new part of your identity that you were going to have to learn about and explore. The thought fascinated and frightened you. Learning about your heritage also meant learning about fighting demons, vampires, werewolves, rogue fairies. Everyone else had a decade of training on you, and you had none unless you counted a kickboxing class you took for a couple weeks.
The sound of the door opening awoke you from your thoughts. Alec stood there, a tray with assorted food on it. “I wasn’t sure what you’d like best, so I got a little bit of everything,” he said almost sheepishly as he set the tray down on my lap gently. “What is your favorite food?”
You muttered a soft thank you at his generosity, taking a bite of the sweet roll. “It’s (your favorite food).”
He smiled, shaking his head. “No way, mine too … Weird, huh?” You laughed with him, your cheeks heating again.
“Please, I can’t eat all of this, have some,” you pushed the tray towards him, suddenly remembering all of the bullying you’d heard in your life about implications of your eating habits.
“Y/N, please. You’re famished. You need to eat, I already did before we tested the rune on you.”
“I just hate eating when no one else is,” you admitted, losing your appetite. “It makes me feel-”
“Don’t. I’ve told you once, and I’ll tell you yet again. You are beautiful and always will be no matter how much you do or don’t weigh. There’s nothing wrong with having extra weight, and for what it’s worth, I think you look stupidly sexy,” he kissed your nose cutely. “I’ll be right back. I’m going to go get a snack to eat with you so you don’t have to feel uncomfortable.”
He didn’t allow you to speak another word as he got up and shut the door behind him. Most men you had known would never do something like that for you … Try to make you feel as comfortable as they could. It made your heart feel funny, but in a good way.
Alec came back in, a bag of pretzels in his hand. He opened it, eating a pretzel whole and sitting on the bed next to your feet. “Eat, gorgeous,” he winked. Sexy looked good on Alec, you chuckled inside your head. You took another bite of your roll, not feeling as awkward now.
“So,” you broke the silence, well besides the chewing noises. “I’m going to learn to train?”
Alec swallowed. “Yeah, I’m going to train you myself mostly. Jace is a hard ass, but Izzy would be helpful too. If not instill inappropriate ideas in your head,” he laughed as if he were recalling a past memory.
“And I’ll have to fight demons?” Alec nearly choked, coughing with his fist against his chest.
“Y/N, not for a long time”, he put his hand on your lower thigh. “Me, Izzy, Jace, we’ve all been training since we were just kids. We didn’t get to kill our first demon for years. Don’t worry, I’m not going to throw you to the wolves. I couldn’t do that to you. I mean, even if someone wanted to it would go against the Clave. God forbid anyone goes against the clave. You saw the Inquisitor, for Christ’s sake.” He reassured you, giving you leg a soft squeeze before going back to his pretzels.
“I trust you,” you said, hardly believing your own words. Trust wasn’t something that came naturally to you, not since your first boyfriend and all the people that had broken your trust one too many times.
“I promise I won’t break you trust,” he said quickly, as if sensing your pain behind his previous words. You nodded at him, digging into your mashed potatoes and gravy now with a small smile.
The door opened again, and this time it was Jace, Izzy, and Clary. “Hey,” Jace said, giving me a nod.
“So, you’re one of us!” Izzy exclaimed, coming up to give you a sporadic hug. You were shocked she didn’t accidentally dip her hair into your coke.
“I guess I am,” you said sheepishly, giving polite smiles to Clary and Jace.
“Welcome to your new family,” Jace said, giving you a fist bump as Clary came and hugged you, less impulsively than Izzy though.
You cringed not with unhappiness at the word family. You already felt so close to Izzy and Alec, and Clary and Jace seemed just as kind. Well, Jace sort of scared you. He kind of was a loose canon, but you trusted Alec to protect you.
Alec looked at me, smiling softly. “We start training tomorrow.”
