Noa held the ice pack to my sore jaw as I remained seated on her bathroom counter.
Knowing my parents were in town made me feel entirely excited, especially since I could possibly introduce Noa in a different manner.
They always saw her as a family friend, but I wanted more now.
"You seem awfully happy for someone who just got kidnapped," Noa joked, taking in the excited look on my face.
I hummed happily, "That's because I'm with you," I said, using my legs to pull her closer to me.
After what I had just been through, there was no way that I would be sugarcoating my feelings for Noa.
It opened my eyes and showed me that there's really no point in beating around the bush.
Life is way too short for all of that.
Noa cleared her throat for what felt like the millionth time—at this point, I had gathered that it was her nervous tick.
"So look," she said, pursing her lips as she leaned away from me.
And just by the serious expression on her face, I knew it couldn't be good.
I slid down off the counter, "What is it?" I questioned as I set the ice pack down.
It felt like the happy mood was slowly fading into something dark.
Noa pursed her lips together, clearly hesitant about her next words.
But after a few beats, she finally said, "It might be best for your safety if you leave."
I furrowed my brows, "What do you mean leave?" I asked, clearly trying to figure out what leaving implied.
Noa sighed slightly, "Like leave and go back to New York," she explained, and it was clear that she wasn't that fond of the idea either.
I shook my head, feeling my chest tighten at even the thought of leaving.
"I'm perfectly fine here," I assured her, but Noa only shook her head.
"But you're not—you just got kidnapped and two weeks ago you were involved in a shootout," Noa explained, but all I could think about was how dreadful the idea sounded.
Well, until another idea suddenly popped into my head.
"Would you come with me?" I subtly asked, hoping to make Noa smile, but it only seemed to do the opposite.
Why is she frowning like that?
Wait...
This isn't just about leaving, is it?
My body grew hot with a sudden irritation, realizing that this was Vincent's doing.
"Did Vincent put you up to this?" I suddenly asked, hoping to talk some sense into her.
But she only shook her head, "It wasn't just Vincent... Your parents think it's best if you leave too."
They do?
