I slip the two sodas this woman's purchased into a bag, print her receipt and send her on her way. How much longer for this shift? Don't ask me why working at a corner store all summer sounded like a good idea to me. I would much rather be sewing clothes patterns together and selling them online, or working at a cool record shop- y'know, something that might actually peak my interest? But, I need quick money. I applied to work with Mindy and Tara, but I never even see them during our shifts, and these stupid green vests are atrocious. Ugh, I should probably text Wes. We barely talked at dinner last night, and he didn't text me this morning. I feel like I was probably a little too hard on the situation, but what was I supposed to do?

As I look down to glance at my watch, someone else walks in and takes hold of the register- I guess my break is now.

I take the hint and walk to the break room, scanning the empty lunch tables and vending machines. I decide there's no way I'm sitting in here for 45 minutes- alone. I grab a coke and head to the back closet where I know Mindy's working inventory. I enter the room, full of stacks of both opened and unopened boxes of product. She's walking around with a scanner and a clipboard, taking down either names or numbers, turning to face me as I open the door.

"Look who decided to join the partay," Mindy says sarcastically as I walk in, "lunch break?"

"Yeah, break room was empty." I answer, jumping up and sitting on a big stack of boxes.

"Mindy, did you scan the boxes over there?" Tara asks, walking over from the other side of a shelf, I guess she got stuck in here too.

"Yeah, I checked them already."

"Well fuck, what else is there to do?" She drops her head and walks over to us.

"Uhh, we still have the chips and those over there, but I don't know what's in them yet." Mindy waves her clipboard.

"Well I get off in 5, so I'll just finish early." Tara says, leaning on another pile of unopened boxes, obviously giving up.

Mindy rolls her eyes and continues scanning.

"You guys doing anything tonight?" Tara asks.

"I'm just gonna stay in, mom left this morning so I think I'll just chill tonight." I answer. Nothing in the past few days has kept me inclined to go out. I think I'll just hang back, save myself the anxiety, stress and overall heartbreak tonight.

"You saying no to going out? Oh something happened." Mindy turns to me.

"What? Nothing happened." I lie, I really don't feel like talking about our date last night but- I mean, what else am I supposed to do. I'm gonna end up telling them anyway, so why not now?

"Come one y/n, spill." Tara entices.

I sigh and sit up. Here we go.

"He didn't even tell me!" Mindy throws her arms up.

"So, he invited Chad- a whole other person- to your date, something two people do- alone?" Tara leans over. I'm standing up now, I just got up out of instinct and Tara's sitting on the boxes now. Mindy stopped scanning a long time ago and is just leaning against the wall.

"Yeah..." I rub the bridge of my nose.

Okay, I admit, it sounds worse now that I'm saying it out loud. When I'd thought it over, it just boiled down to a miscommunication. I brushed it off, but now I don't know.

"y/n, girl- that's not-" Tara responds.

"I know, I know but, we just need to talk about it- I'm sure he didn't mean anything by it."
