The steam from the Hogwarts Express billowed as it came to a screeching halt in front of me. Its loud screams seemed to intimidate those who had never seen it, inspiring whirlwinds of emotions stirring within them.
I observed the machined beast as a solitary figure amidst the lively chatter and laughter of other students and families. My heart thudded as I prepared to embark on a new chapter of my life—taking that next step beyond the past.
Glancing around, I couldn't help but notice the curious gazes that followed me. I was used to standing out, but this time, it was different. My wrist twitched as the familiar, almost comforting sting surged around my left middle finger.
It swells.
"What?" I whispered under my breath, distracted by all of the commotion.
Your darkness.
Rolling my eyes, I decided not to answer the trapped god. Evil gods of the underworld that my uncle has imprisoned should be seen and not heard!
I twiddled my thumbs and moved between the balls of my feet to my heels as I awaited the large train doors to invite myself and others inside. Albus had offered to make a special arrangement to take me to Hogwarts, but I wanted to experience this world firsthand.
But now that I was standing here, I started to get why he opted for the V.I.P. arrival instead. Now I might not be the smartest man in this land, but even I knew my presence here was strange.
Firstly, these people will not and do not recognize me.
Secondly, I am by myself.
Thirdly, I am old as Hades compared to the other first years.
And fourthly, I'm not bringing any belongings except my own customized vintage robe.
Yeah, not as lowkey as I initially wanted.
As the doors began to open and the students rushed to sit with their friends, I couldn't help but wonder how Hogwarts would change me. I've heard tales of its grandeur and mystery, but that all came from Albus.
Who is extraordinarily biased.
Taking my first step to board the train, I quickly searched to find an empty compartment to settle in. Passing by countless windows, I couldn't help but look on at the groups of students huddled together, cackling and exchanging stories—my chest gripped as I saw the campers from Camp Half-Blood in them.
Just as I found a vacant seat, a girl with shoulder-length straight brown hair approached me with an enthusiastic smile, effectively blocking my way. "Hi there! I'm Leanne, a fifth-year Hufflepuff. You must be new. First time to Hogwarts?"
My eyes darted to what I assumed was her Hufflepuff emblem, and I raised an eyebrow. What was it? Some weird-looking skunk? It was either that or a really, really, really big rat.
"Wow, good guess. You must be some kind of Sherlock." I quipped, leaning onto the side of one of the cabins as I eyed down the aisle to ensure no one would steal my humble abode.
Leanne laughed, undeterred by my demeanor. "You talk funny, and yeah, I've got a knack for these things. Need any help finding your way around?"
"Uhh... I think I'll manage just fine, thanks," I replied, trying to hide my impatience to secure the seat. "I don't need a Mufflebuff tour guide to hold my hand."
Leanne chuckled. "Alright, sassy-pants. If you change your mind, you know where to find us. See you around!" She finished, moving around my figure to walk toward the front of the train.
