Scarlett's POV

It really sucks that vampires can't sleep..

I lay awake in the bed, alone in the dark. But what was there to be afraid of? I was a bloodsucking vampire!

The dark did not vex me in the slightest. But the hunger, the thirst, that's what frightened me. The searing pain in the back of my throat, so raw, so dry.

I needed blood. And that terrified me. I can't take the life of an innocent person!

I growled, suddenly angry at Matt for turning me into this. I envisioned snapping his neck in one swift movement. After all, I did have super-human strength now. I shuddered at such a violent, grotesque thought. Matt was only trying to help. I think to myself. He means no harm... Wait...

Matt!

Matt can get me food!

I felt my stomach grumble at the thought of a meal. I frowned and sat up. I treated Matt so badly after he tried to help me. Would he be mad at me? I thought for a bit before my stomach grumbled again.

My throat was killing me.

I'm so thirsty...

Slowly, I got off the bed and stood at the closed door, listening for a sound but I heard nothing.

All was silent. I turned the doorknob and pulled open the door slowly, silently.

"Matt?" I called out into the darkness.

I heard a soft shuffling and soon a pale face came into view.

Vampires had amazing vision, actually.

"You hungry yet?" A voice asked me.

"Starving!"

He chuckled softly. And then he coughed, trying to cover the smirk on his face.

"Are you... Are you mad at me?" He asked hesitantly.

Yeah, I wanted to say, furious. But because he was the only one who could help me get food, instead I said, "Nah, you were only trying to help. I'm sorry for over-reacting."

He nodded, face blank now. I could tell he didn't believe my bluff.

"So, uh, your first.. meal as a vampire has to be human blood..." He said slowly, "Are you cool with that?"

I nodded, hesitant. "Uh.. And how do I.. You know, kill someone?" I was nervous as hell. "Can vampires be nervous?"

He laughed and nodded. "Vampires still have the same feelings, though they're kind of useless considering we're basically dead and all... And you just, like attack the person, and kill them... There is really no way to explain it. Your instincts just take over."

I was pretty damn grateful that vampire don't sweat, otherwise I'd be sweating and shaking nervously. But I nodded and Matt took my hand and gave it a reassuring squeeze before we stepped outside the front door.

And everything was so much more vivid! My senses were heightened greatly. I took a couple of steps around, taking everything in, Matt's hand still clutched tightly in mine. Everything was much more clear, every sound much louder, every smell much stronger. It was like I was living in HD!

I heard the soft fluttering of a butterflies wings, saw its antennas, the details on its wings. I heard the drip of a drop of dew falling off a leaf. I saw the pollen of flowers floating gracefully with the wind. I heard the hushed chatters of a faraway conversation, the sound of their footsteps...

And then I sniffed the air and I smelled their blood. Glorious blood that made my stomach tighten and my throat burn with thirst.

And I couldn't help but grin. Food!

Matt's POV

I don't know what came over me, but I just had to reach out and grab her hand. So I did. And I felt like such a sap but she didn't seem to think much of it, thank god! She did really seem nervous though, so I squeezed her hand. I really hope she still isn't mad at me. I needed her to know that I'm a good guy and I'm only trying to help her. I needed her to trust me.

I opened the front door, leading her outside and she paused, taken aback. And the look on her face was priceless. She took in the scenery, walking around. Still, I held her hand and I followed her. She looked around in wonder, probably amazed at how much more clear everything was. And I couldn't help but watch her curiously. And I smiled to myself, grateful she didn't notice.

And then I heard her sniff the air, and I saw the corners of her lips twitch up in a grin. And I knew instantly what she was thinking: blood.

So I gripped her hand tighter. Newborns are usually more reckless and kill any living body in their sights. But she seemed... calm. Which is weird because earlier she admitted she was so nervous.

When I was a newbie, I was dying for my first taste of blood. But she was calm, cool, and collected. She gave me a grin and pulled me in the direction where the voices came from.

This is going to be interesting...

Scarlett's POV

I don't know what just happened, but I do know that my stomach is content and my throat is no longer aching.

I was pretty calm at first, more excited than nervous, definitely hungry. We found the source of that faraway conversation, two young men, probably in their early twenties, wandering the dark alleyways at night.

And well, I'm sure you can guess what happened next..

In short terms, I sunk my fangs in both of their necks and drained them of their blood...

Yeah, it was pretty messy, but not too bad for my first time, Matt says.

But, it was the most delicious, satisfying thing I had ever tasted.

Bittersweet.

Bitter because I just took two lives.

But also sweet because I was starving.

Matt says I'll get over the guilt eventually though. And he says I don't always have to drink human blood. Just once a month is fine. He said vampires can also survive on animal blood, but it's not as tasty or filling.

So I nodded and licked my lips, feeling content, and smiled at Matt.

Maybe this vampire thing won't be so bad...

Matt's POV

Is it wrong to say that was probably the hottest thing I'd ever seen? Scarlett tore up those two guys, man. She sunk her fangs and dug in. But she did it.. calmly, carefully... And it was beautiful.

God, I am twisted.

Welcome to the glorious life of being a vampire, you guys.

I had to clean up her bloody mess but whatever.

I'd witnessed plenty of newbie's first feedings and they were never that calm or that careful.

And it only made her even more intriguing.

In my own sick little ways, I'm kind of glad Liz bit her.

It was bittersweet.

Sweet because Scarlett was something new in my life, something fascinating.

But bitter because this poor girl was damned to suffer the rest of her undead life with a vampire loser like me who she barely even trusts.

Vampire loser?

I need to work on my self-esteem...

But obviously it was no coincidence that of all girls, it just so happened to be Scarlett that Liz bit and turned. The mysterious girl from the subway.

Maybe fate was feeling sorry for me and wanted to make my life less sucky...

But nah, fate wouldn't be so kind to me.
