Matt's POV

"Tell me about what it's like being a vampire," Scarlett asked, sitting on the bed with her back against the wall. Her hair was a light shade of brown, hazel, like her eyes. It was long and wavy, and covered half her face most of the time, which is a bit of a shame considering how beautiful she is. It was a subtle, simple kind of beauty, one you could appreciate.

I was laying on my back on the bed, staring at the ceiling because I was too awkward to look her in the eyes. "What'dya wanna know?"

"Everything." She said nonchalantly with a shrug.

"Everything? Damn, Scarlett. Can't you just Google 'vampires'?" I said with a hint of laughter. I glanced over at her but her expression was blank. She was silent. "Scarlett, do you have a sense of humor?"

"Maybe I do have a sense of humor, maybe you're just the one who isn't funny." The corners of her lips twitched upward in a small smirk.

"No, I'm pretty sure it's you because I'm hilarious."

She rolled her eyes at me. "Whatever, just tell me about vampires."

"Well, we play piano, spend hours applying hairspray and sunblock, and sparkle in the sun."

She tried to stifle her laugh but I heard it anyway.

"I made you laugh!" I exclaimed, sitting up. My back was against the other wall. I stretched out my legs in front of me.

She sighed and smirked, though she tried hard to hide her smile. She lay her legs over mine. "Are you ever going to tell me about vampires?"

I froze for a second when her legs made contact with mine but she didn't seem to care much about it. I guess she just wanted to stretch. Why does she make me so tense?

"Welcome to Vampires 101! Please take out a notebook and pencil so you can take notes. The informational lecture will now begin!" I said in a teacher's voice. Again, she laughed.

"You're really immature, you know." She said.

"Well I am stuck being seventeen forever," I said flatly. Her smile ceased. I immediately felt bad once I said it. "Vampires obviously drink blood but there are some like my cousin and I who drink animal blood sometimes too. You really only need human blood once every month or so. We don't sleep. I mean, we could if we wanted to, I guess, but it is not at all relaxing because we don't need rest. We don't sweat, smell, poop, whatever, all the yucky human stuff. We're sorta strong and sorta fast but it's not like extreme superhuman abilities. Uh... I don't know what else. It's not very complicated."

She listened attentively, nodding occasionally. Her expression was blank as usual.

"How does a vampire die?" Her question was followed by a silence. It was a question I did not have the answer to. I'm sure she was rattling her brain, trying to find ways to destroy herself and her existence.

"Do you hate me?" The words slipped out of my mouth before I had a chance to think. Did she really hate us so much she couldn't stand an eternity with Liz and I?

The question seemed to startle her. "No, of course not!" She said, her eyes wide. "I was just wondering..."

I nodded slowly, trying to pass it off that I didn't care so much, like I wasn't lonely. I don't want to seem too desperate!

But the truth is, I am lonely and desperate. And you know what? I wanted to die, too, but I couldn't leave Liz alone. All we have is each other.

Maybe that's another reason why I found Scarlett interesting, the fact that we both have a death wish.
