"So it's just that you only missed the two first years of high school here, but you'll be fine. You have me and I would never leave you." Serenity said over the phone. "I'm even on the way to getting you when you have a ride with the boys, but you don't want to ride with them."
"Kamari's being a little bit of a douche since he's seen me and keeps poking fun about getting married and stuff."
"He's what?!" She screamed. "Oh my ears woman." I laughed and explained the situation which she said "mhmm" the entire time to as if her brain cogs were turning. "Well maybe he likes you after not seeing you all these years."
"Yeah right, in my dreams, him and Demetrius have been the hottest guys since grade school."
"You're not wrong." Serenity laughed and before I knew it she pulled in behind Kamari's BMW. Demetrius and Jordan came out smiling and said hello to Serenity. "I haven't seen your ass in a minute."
"I know." Serenity replied to Jordan and they embraced each other with a hug. "Jordan why don't you just ask her out?" Demetrius asked.
"Because I like Shiloh dawg."
"Serenity never gets the guy." she said as she faked puppy eyes. I laughed and Kamari came out looking tired as hell. "What's got you so tired?" I said playfully.
"My girl."
At that point, my heart kind of stopped. Like oh? Kamari had a girlfriend, thanks for the news everybody. Shouldn't be surprising to me, but I guess definitely disappointing knowing that one of the Smith brothers is off the market. Serenity gave me a look and grabbed my hand saying that we would all see each other at school and to have a great day at practice.
All three of the boys were in football, but only Kamari and Jordan played basketball. Demetrius liked more free time and only really played football to make his dad happy. His dad wanted him to become an all star and play for the pros. I could see my brother making it into a good college and becoming an all star if he wanted to, but he seems to be wanting to pursue his dream, which is to become a veterinarian. He loves animals. But he also loves sports and sports medicine. I don't really know, but I know those are his top two. Shiloh brings out the most in him as well, but I wouldn't care if Serenity and Jordan ever got together, plus that would make us sisters. Which would only bolden our bond even more.
"So..." Serenity says popping two pieces of gum into her mouth. "Kamari has a girl."
"I guess so."
"I guess so?" She looked at me. "We have to find out who she is and what they were doing."
"Maybe they were just texting and she was blowing up his phone." I responded.
"Or blowing him." I fake gagged at what she said and she threw her arms up in the air; "What?"
"I don't think I want to find out."
"Oh I think you do, cause if it's Macie Keys, he just broke your promise." As soon as she said that, I turned to where her eyes were directed and saw Kamari pull up into his parking spot with the all too known Macie Keys in his passenger seat. Just like the passenger princess that she is, he got out of his car to open the door for her.
How precious.
There was no way that he forgot the promise, but then also I was in third grade and he was in fourth when we swore this. So who would remember and what could I even hold against him for something we said when we were six.
I got out of the car and didn't say much to Serenity as she followed beside me. Kamari eyed me as I walked in front of Macie and him. He honked the horn making me jump a bit and seeing Macie laugh behind his tinted window made me throw up my middle finger at him.
He threw one back.
Macie Keys is living hell for me. Or at least that what she wants my life to be. For some reason I've never said aloud the words that I've ever had a crush on either one of the Smith brothers, and she just has it out for me. She thinks I am in love with Kamari, but we just both play basketball and practice with each other sometimes. But she's always saying I'm a little too close for comfort and not even related to him so why am I always around. She doesn't understand why I have to be in the "picture."
In the past she has tried to throw herself at Demetrius, but she failed so hard no one forgot it for about a year. But then she grew up and got boobs and last I heard she was after Kamari and seems like she got the job done since she's the passenger queen of his diamond ride.
But who am I to be jealous? Plus don't I possibly have love to look forward to this year with Khari? Well let's see if he's even going to this high school. "Serenity does Khari go to Eastside Heights?"
"Oh yeah, he does." She said and kind of cut off her sentence.
"Why'd you say it like that?"
"Say it like what?"
As I was about to respond I saw Khari with his arm around another girl strolling through the hall. Wow. No, yeah. I've really been gone for two years and everything has changed. But I can't blame anyone for that. It's nobody's fault.
I proceeded on once again not saying anything and Serenity said she already had informed the principle that I will be her shadow today. Plus we have all of the same classes this year so thank god.
But when I entered the first classroom, I knew I would dread the day. It doesn't help that I am in most advanced classes, so most of them are filled with seniors. But this one is junior year health that I needed to take for having missed it freshman year, and I'm surprised, but also rather dismayed that Kamari, Demetrius, and Jordan were in this class.
"Oh my god, hey lil sis." Jordan patted at a stool beside him. "You guys can sit at the cool table, and if you don't I'll kill you for letting me sit next to these other underclassmen."
"That's hilarious because I'm pretty sure your girlfriends are also in this class so are you sure you want that?" Serenity snapped back.
"Oh wait, how do you know Shiloh's in here?"
"Cause I do big boy." Serenity patted his shoulder and dragged me to the table across from them.
And just my luck, the seat I have is facing Kamari across from me. But at least we're not dealing with each other at the same table.
Maybe I came off too strong when we first arrived? But, I don't see what I did that could have offended him.
"Hey baby~" Macie said from the door looking like she was basically ready to strip for her boyfriend. I guess Kamari had that effect on girls.
Especially ditzy ones like Macie.
"The old gang is here." Khari waltzed in the room with his new girl and in followed Shiloh with Ophelia. I never had a problem with either Shiloh or Ophelia besides the fact that they were best friends with Macie and apparently so Khari's girl.
"As always, you know it, never apart and together forever." Serenity smiled and held my hand in hers. As she gave it a squeeze I felt a bit happier, we always did as such whenever one of us was feeling down. And it didn't matter whether we actually were or not, it could be the other way around.
Khari, Shiloh, and Ophelia sat at the table, plus Khari's hand piece. I don't know why, but I feel some type of way about the situation since we were talking only a month before I moved back.
"Hey Kailina, how was being overseas?"
"It was actually somewhat relaxing to separate from normal routine for a bit." I replied and Shiloh nodded saying "I'm glad you're back."
"Yeah me too, you look good now." Khari's comment threw the girl beside him off and she had introduced herself telling me her name was Bella Lacer. As she tried to get to know me, all I really paid attention to was how my brother had said: "You're not happy I'm back?" And him and Shiloh had their own little couple quarrel.
"Attention students, please take your seats."
The rest of the class that hadn't already been sitting, did as followed and the female teacher took the expo marker to the white board.
It read: "Mrs. Templeton."
"This is my name and no other names are allowed as of that one, unless you come up with something good or I like you."
Serenity giggled and she immediately aimed her eyes at our table.
"Is there something funny miss...?"
"Serenity."
"Miss Serenity?— because I am being fully honest and direct with what I say."
"Understood Mrs. Templeton." Serenity lowered her head in shame and smiled back at me as I gave her a reassuring one that she'll be fine.
All of class was learning how to draw reflection and being able to cast the shadows with proper shading.
The next class was math, that was a breeze and I decided not to think about the fact that even the integrated classes had Kamari and Khari in it. But not all of them included Demetrius and Jordan, which I would have preferred it that way instead of how things are right now.
By the time lunch rolled around I was ready to walk my happy ass out of the high school. Every single girl had learned of who Jordan and I were and I was being stared at as if I was a doggy treat or a piñata filled with Gucci bags inside. Some guys were curious as to who I was. All of this information came to me from Serenity mind you, and she's a social buzz bee.
I couldn't wait to get out of the there. It was like I couldn't breathe.
"You wanna ditch after lunch?" I asked looking at Serenity as we walked towards her car. "Always."
And just like that— she started her engine and asked: "Where to and what are we doing?"
