"What do you mean you're not going again?"
Reyna sighed. She refused to attend Black Mass when it was led by him. Of course that was not the official reason. She always made something up. Gardening duties, sudden headache or simply being tired. But this was the third in a row she would not attend and her friend Nebula was getting suspicious, although she did not know about the history Reyna and the current Papa shared. It's been almost three years since that fateful day that shifted Reyna's whole world. And since that day, she did not attend a single Black Mass of his. What could she say? She knew how to hold a grudge.
Reyna scratched her horns protruding a little bit from her scarlett hair. Since embracing her ghoul side, they have grown a significant amount. Her hair colour also changed. In the past, it could be described as simply ginger, but now they glowed deep red like flames. It made her yellow eyes look that more unnatural. Good. She didn't want to even resemble a human being.
"Nebula, you know I have to finish my library duties. I still have a lot to do."
"I could help you, I'm all finished with my tasks in the garden."
"You're very kind, but you know I like working alone. I have my own system," Reyna smiled at her friend, hoping she wouldn't suspect anything. But Nebula wasn't stupid.
"You never go when it's Papa who's leading them," she mumbled, her voice sounding a little accusatory.
"I just don't enjoy them. In my opinion, he can't lead them very well. It's pretty boring for me to be honest," Reyna offered an explanation, but her friend just scoffed.
"Boring? You clearly haven't been to one."
"I have been to a few before your summoning," Reyna lied. "And I don't plan on going ever again."
Nebula pouted. "Fine. You enjoy that dusty library by yourself. I'm going to find the best seat closest to Papa."
"Yeah, you do that," Reyna smiled again and embraced her.
The trip to the library wasn't a long one. On her way, Reyna met a few siblings of sin making their way to the abbey to gather for the Mass. Not a single one met her gaze as they hurried past her, uneased by her presence. Over the last few years, the half-ghoul has earned quite the reputation. Nobody wanted to see what could happen if they crossed paths. Reyna couldn't help but grin as a group of siblings scurried past her with their heads down. The smile showed her teeth, longer than they have ever been. She couldn't hide them anymore, not that she wanted to.
The door to the library was rather large and carved with various ornaments. Sometimes Reyna wondered how anyone could be so patient to create such a beautiful thing from a simple piece of wood. She pushed it open and stepped into the dimly lit room smelling the familiar scent of old books. Usually, the light there was bright enough to provide a good reading environment, but the lamps have not been lit in a while. Everyone was gathering for the Mass.
Well, not everyone. Reyna could hear faint rustling of habits the siblings used to wear mixed with the sound one made when pleasured. The moans were certainly not silent, though the large door provided an excellent sound barrier. She rolled her eyes. Some stupid people probably wanted to take advantage of the shelter the empty library provided and decided to hide here. The moans were getting louder. It sounded like someone was approaching their climax. Reyna smirked. Time to ruin it for them.
She stomped very loudly and angrily as she approached the sounds. But as she turned the corner and readied herself to scold the pair, she was momentarily stunned. But that feeling was replaced by hate very quickly.
Reyna watched as the woman scrambled to put her habit down, cheeks red as a lobster. But the man didn't share the hurry. He languidly pulled his luxurious pants back on and then began to button his shirt not even looking at Reyna's direction like she wasn't worth the attention. He straightened his robes and with his golden-tipped gloved fingers straightened his mitre.
"Emeritus," Reyna gritted through her teeth, her voice dripping with venom.
"Ghoul."
"Still fucking everything that has a hole?"
"Asking for someone or are you just jealous?"
She hissed at him, revealing her dangerously pointy canines. If looks could kill, Papa would be torn apart by now. The sister of sin excused herself and tried to make her swift exit, but Terzo stopped her.
"We'll finish this later. I'll send a ghoul for you," he whispered lasciviously. The woman nodded and then yelped, as he slapped her butt, sending her on her way. Reyna tasted bile on her tongue as she watched the sister slip from the room. The door slammed behind her.
"You're so disgusting. I fear I might catch some STD just standing in the same room as you," Reyna snarled. Terzo laughed, clearly unfazed with the hateful words spilling from her mouth.
"You might want to ask the siblings, Reyna. They would tell you the STDs are absolutely worth it." He began walking past her. "Now, if you excuse me, I have a lot of damned souls to tend to. Wouldn't want to keep them waiting." He turned his back to her.
"Yeah, wouldn't want to hurt them or disappoint them. Your precious humans."
Reynas' voice had a sting of betrayal to it. It seemed like Terzo picked up on it as he stopped and turned a little. He inhaled and it seemed like he wanted to say something. But the inhale turned into a deep sigh as he turned back to the door and quietly left the room, leaving Reyna fuming with anger.
His steps filled the quiet hallway. He was late to the Black Mass, but that wouldn't be a surprise to anyone. He always liked to be fashionably late. And being late also provided him with plenty of time to put his thoughts in order.
Underneath his facade of black and white paint there was a storm of emotions. He could almost convince himself he hated her. Her stupid pointy teeth and her ridiculous horns. Yes, his mind was almost convinced.
But his heart knew better.
