Arthur assured us that he had been able to figure out where Button's original device went wrong. Why there had been a little accident. He quickly changed the subject and sold us on the idea by appealing to our various vulnerabilities.
"Tired of feeling anxious in social situations? Being nervous when speaking in public? Too much pressure filled anxiety at your job interview? Stressed out by your children, significant other, or family? Well, well. Lets imagine if for one night or week or whatever length we agree upon, that you would have no empathy, no sympathy, no fear or anxiety. Just... clarity of mind." What a grandiose idea! The thought of becoming something that we had spent hours discussing was now in the realm of possibilities. He knew he had reeled us in, he just needed to place us in the bucket.
Looking back, there were obvious flaws, but Arthur was so sure of himself. As I let my mind wander to a place it had rarely dared venture, a voice came from the back. "This all sounds intriguing Arthur, but just how do you plan to get the schematics for all of this?" All of our heads turned in sync and focused intently on Arthur as his face lit up like a Christmas tree. "I have the schematics." As a sly, narcissistic grin slid across his face. "Now I just need the personnel and the subjects to perform the experiment."
Bewildered and intently curious, we were caught up in the moment. None of us dared ask Arthur how he has obtained this information and secured the schematics. We all saw the astounding potential that this machine had, and nobody wanted to be the one to lose this golden opportunity.
We had to choose the subjects, then figure out the financial aspects. After, we'd decided how to begin implementing the trial. Our little group of misfits now had an agenda. Watching Arthur's video and seeing the helment in action, we felt exhilirated. We would be allowed into the psyche of a sociopath and psychopath. Incredible!
