CHAPTER THREE

ALLIES

Despite the horror of what he did... Lucas knew he got lucky with Angela. She had everything he needed. A bow with 12 arrows, and a backpack full of crackers, water, and a first aid kit. As he strapped the bow and arrow around him... he admitted there was a power in it. He went from being prey to predator.

He also remembered what Angela had said, that the other 'career' tributes were out looking for him and Max. He had a game plan:

I need a place to hold up. When the time comes, I'll use this bow and arrow to hopefully pick them off.

Lucas certainly didn't enjoy the idea of having to kill people... but he knew if he didn't wanna die, he would have to.

Still, there was one thought that was going through Lucas' mind.

If he survives... How are his parents gonna respond to what he just did?

How is everyone else gonna respond?

While nobody from District 12 had ever come back from the games... There had been plenty of times a District 12 tribute managed to get at least one kill. When that happened, the reactions from the other people there mixed. Some people hailed them as a hero.

"Showing them we aren't all just prey!"

But some people never spoke of them again.

Lucas knew if either him or Max were the ones to survive... they'd be the very first people in District 12 to return from the games in its history.

How would the people back home respond?

There was also something else he was thinking about...

When Lucas started bashing the rock down on Angela's head, he knew that the coverage of the games, that broadcast all over the capitol, that everyone in all 12 districts is forced to watch, switched to it and showed what Lucas did.

His sister saw it.

His father saw it.

His mother saw it.

Is mom ever gonna look at me the same way again?

But Lucas knew he couldn't think about that. He knew that he had to make sure that his sister, father, and mother would be able to look at him again at all.

Lucas took the water and bag of crackers and took one bite and sip. At this point, both felt EXTREMELY good.

Then, all of a sudden, he heard,

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!

The sound of what sounded like a girl screaming.

Then,

BOOM

The cannon goes off. Lucas jolts up.

Then, he hears,

"Nice job on that one! Took her out EASILY!"

I gotta get outta here...

Lucas puts the water and crackers back in Angela's backpack, straps the bow and arrow around him, with the backpack,

This backpack and both the bow and arrow on me aren't very comfortable...

And starts getting away from there as quickly as he could. He doesn't want to be too quick, cause he doesn't want whatever tributes that were nearby to hear him... but he definitely wants to get out of there soon.

Lucas walks around for what was probably hours.

Endlessly walking around the woods that seem to go for an eternity.
