Chapter 4:I wake slowly. My eyes are sealed shut, do I dare open them? The last thing I remember is crossing the street to get away from the dangerous men at the bar- after that...nothing.
My head aches horribly and my hair sticks to my skin. I feel nauseated and sore. My muscles ache, as if I had just finished a workout.
My eyes open to an unfamiliar and grungy bedroom. I'm laying on a single mattress in the middle of a bare room. The sheets are a clean cotton white with an oak headboard leaning against a gray, concrete wall. There is no door to the room, just a doorway which leads out to what looks like a basement.
My hand goes to my head, where a damp wash cloth lays folded against my throbbing, hot skin. There are small blood stains spotted along the white rag. My left arm is bruised. A rainbow of purple and black painted along my wrist like a dark storm cloud.
I hear light conversation coming just feet from me. I wince.
Where am I?
What happened to me?
Was I kidnapped?
What the hell is going on?
I stand quickly, my heart leaping from my chest. I don't have a plan. I don't know what to do. Do I chance going outside?
There are no windows in the mysterious room I stand in. There is only one way out.
The conversation picks up outside as I carefully tip toe to the doorway. I wait briefly, leaning against the cold wall- straining to hear the rough, manly voices.
"You're such a softie Jax!" A man cackles obnoxiously.
"Seriously bro! You're gonna bring a hot girl like that home and you aren't even gonna get in her pants...what a shame."
What the fuck?
"Dude..."
"What?"
"You're such an asshole sometimes..."
The conversation died down from there, spinning off into small talk. This was my chance...
I slowly stepped through the doorway, my heartbeat picking up and sweat sprouting on the back of my neck. I gripped the wall from some sense of support. A small light cascaded down a small flight of stairs that lead to an old wooden door.
Was my escape really that easy?
I nearly jump onto the stairs but I'm startled when the door shakes open and a tall, buff man stands at the top of the stairs. His fitted v-neck complimented his large arms, which strands of his long brown hair clung onto. I gasp and slowly back down the steps.
"Why hello!" He laughs. "You must be Zeke's new girlfriend I have heard so much about!"
Um...
"Where are you off to?"
"Uh. Um- I.."
"Bubba is that you?!" The sound of boots scuffing against hard flooring pierces through my ear. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck.
I'm gonna fucking die!
He walks out of the hallway with grace. His golden blond hair is smoothed back by a black toboggan. He wears a light blue button up with a white t-shirt as an under layer. Black jeans hug his slim but fit hips and dance down his legs to his calves, where his black combat boots are laced tightly.
But I'm thrown off by the alcohol that's being gripped around his calloused fingers.
His expression is soft but surprised as he gazes at me boldly.
"So, Zeke's new girl, ay?" The tall brunette slaps a hand on my shoulder and I wince and stare up at him with wild eyes- afraid.
The blonde shakes his head vigorously.
"I wasn't expecting you to wake so soon..." He takes three steps forward closing the distance between us. "I'm Jaxson, but you can call me Jax." He extends his long arm, revealing a hand for me to shake.
"Where the hell am I? I want to leave!" I'm louder than I mean to be...but I'm scared and I don't want to be here surrounded by strangers. I get that enough at my house with my father.
"Yikes!" The brunette removes his hand from my shoulder, "I'll take that as my cue to leave." He walks away with his hands held in the air in defense, nearly bumping into Jax's shoulder.
It's now or never. I run up the stairs.
But I'm stopped by a hand on my arm.
"Wait!"
I squint my eyes tight. "Scott! Please stop!" My father holds me tight in his grip yet again, a shock flowing up my arm. I yelp.
Not again...
"Who's Scott?" I gaze down at the boy below me who's eyes wander over my distressed face.
I can't believe I just said that out loud...
"No one! Just let me go!" I break through the door and stumble through the overgrown yard.A black Ford pickup sits near the porch of the white, vintage house which is surrounded by bushes and old oak trees. The house sits back away from the main road, covered by vines and trees that cover the fence on either side of the gravel driveway.
"Wait! Please!" His voice is strained and desperate. "Let me help you!"
I turn around quickly, narrowing my eyebrows at this crazy, troubled boy. "Help me? You fucking kidnapped me!"
Jax threw his head back in laughter grabbing his chest, and squinting his eyes. "I didn't kidnap you! Wow! I saved your ass from becoming apart of the pavement on Main Street!"
"Excuse me?" My hands were in a fist at my sides.
"You don't remember anything...do you?"
"I don't even know what you're talking about! This is ridiculous! Why am I still here?!" I spin around swiftly, ready to get myself anywhere but here.
I get a few yards down the long gravel driveway before Jax has planted himself in front of me.
"I can explain while I take you home..." He dangles his keys in front of my face, as if trying to bribe me.
"You've been drinking..." I say continuing my walk down the seemingly endless driveway.
"Fine. We'll walk to your house." A grin spreads across his scruffy face, showing off his white teeth.
"I'm fully capable of walking myself, thank you."
I look around me at the darkness and j have to admit, I am afraid. This isn't the best side of town and its late in the night. I'm not entirely sure where I am or which way I go to get home.
But do I trust him? I mean he did take me back to his house after God knows what happened. He bandaged my head and made sure I was okay. He could have very easily left me, hurt and alone in the night. Is he trustworthy?
But he drinks. Just like my father, Scott. What if he's like me? I can't. I can't. I can't.
"Oh, really? Do you even know where you are?" He stops dead in front of me, his arms crossed against his chest and a smug but sexy smirk plants along his face.
I stop. "No. I don't." A sigh falls from my chapped. He beat me.
I have been defeated.
