I blink several times, trying to snap my mind out of the dazed state I'm in, and I realize I'm still standing in the kitchen. The back door remains open, and in the distance, I see my parents in the backyard, but I have no idea what excuse to give them to justify my sudden appearance at home in the middle of the day. After that shocking scene that left me looking like a lunatic in front of the town's highest authority, everything seems to be falling apart around me, a personal debacle exclusively for me.
I rub my face and let out a long sigh. At that moment, I feel my phone vibrate in my pocket, and I know it's a message from her. I suppose the real problem has just begun.
I glance at the time, 1:20 PM. It's true, I've been out for over two hours. What excuse could I come up with? I know the library doesn't fully rely on me, and I don't deny my responsibilities, but today is the day the packages we've been waiting for arrive, and it's my responsibility to sign for them, not Camila's. I can't just disappear.
I squint my eyes and type a response. She replies immediately.
I put my phone at the bottom of my purse and realize I have several hours to think of a good excuse for both my parents and my boss because being honest won't help me at all. I pass by the kitchen island and grab the glass of water that's already served. I'm about to turn around when my eyes fall on the calendar stuck to the fridge door.
