The phone rang just as I was about to step out of my apartment. I glanced at the caller ID and felt a knot tighten in my stomach. It was a call from my old friend, Ben.
"Chris," he said, his voice strained. "I need your help."
"What's wrong, Ben?" I asked, my heart pounding in my chest.
"It's...it's a murder, Chris. And they think I did it."
His words hit me like a punch. Ben, accused of murder? It was unthinkable. The Ben I knew was incapable of such a thing. He was a lover of nature, a protector of animals, not a killer.
"Slow down, Ben," I said, trying to keep my voice steady. "Tell me everything."
As he relayed the details, I felt a chill run down my spine. This was no ordinary murder case. And it was happening in our small hometown, a place we both had left behind years ago.
"I'll be there, Ben," I said, my mind racing. "Hang tight. We'll figure this out."
As I hung up the phone, I knew my life was about to take a drastic turn. I was heading back to the town I had left behind, to help a friend in need, and to uncover a mystery that would unearth the hidden secrets of our past. Little did I know, this was just the beginning.
