001 : blind date

I OPENED my camera app, meticulously fixing my hair until I was satisfied, only for a playful breeze to tousle it once again. With a sigh, I turned off my phone and slipped it into the pocket of my warm coat.

As I continued walking, I glanced up at the picturesque scenery around me. Delicate snowflakes floated down from the sky, gracefully landing on the ground. The sound of my shoes crunching through the freshly fallen snow accompanied me, while the snowflakes melted against my skin, leaving a cool sensation. Despite the chill in the air, I couldn't help but smile as I felt the gentle touch of the cold breeze on my face.

I was on my way to a café, my purpose being a blind date. It had been a challenging two months since my breakup with my ex-boyfriend, during which I had secluded myself at home, spending endless hours binge-watching TV shows until I drifted off to sleep, only to wake up and repeat the same cycle. It had been a period of sadness and introspection. However, one of my close friends had persistently encouraged me to try a blind dating app for teens as a way to move on from my past relationship. After numerous conversations filled with persuasion, I finally relented, partly to appease my friend and partly in the hope of finding someone special.

After exploring the app for a while, I came across a person who expressed interest in a café blind date. The uncertainty of recognizing each other concerned me since it was, after all, a blind date. As I made my way to the café, I hoped that I wouldn't embarrass myself by sitting with the wrong person.

Eventually, I arrived at the café. Upon entering, I instinctively rubbed the soles of my shoes against the carpet, ensuring that any clinging snow was removed. Taking a moment to brush off any remaining flakes from my coat, I removed my earmuffs and let them dangle around my neck as I surveyed the café, unsure of what exactly to look for.

That's when I noticed a man pointing towards me, his head slightly tilted. He then showed me his screen, displaying the blind dating app, confirming that he was the person I was there to meet. I nodded in recognition, indicating that I was indeed the person he had been expecting.

With a polite bow, I took a seat in front of him. "Hello, my name is Cha Eun-bi," I introduced myself with a warm smile. As I observed him, I couldn't help but notice his charming features. Soft black hair framed his face, and his brown, beady eyes sparkled behind his round glasses.

"My name is Lee Sungho," the man replied, returning the smile.

The conversation started pleasantly as we exchanged pleasantries and engaged in light-hearted small talk. We discussed our favorite cafes, and hobbies, and even shared a few laughs. The initial chemistry seemed promising, and I felt a glimmer of hope that this blind date might turn out to be something special.

As we delved deeper into a conversation, however, subtle signs of discomfort began to emerge. Sungho's responses became curt, and his facial expressions turned more serious. I tried to steer the conversation in a different direction, hoping to regain the relaxed atmosphere we had earlier.

"So, Sungho, have you always lived in this city?" I asked, trying to ignite a new topic.

He sighed, his gaze shifting downward. "No, I moved here a few years ago for my dad's work. It's been a bit of a struggle, to be honest."

I sensed a hint of frustration in his voice, but I pressed on, attempting to show empathy. "I can imagine it must have been challenging. Starting anew in a different place can be quite daunting."

His response, however, caught me off guard. With a scoff, he replied, "Well, it seems like you have it all figured out, don't you? Living your perfect little life while the rest of us struggle."

I was taken aback by his sudden hostility. His words stung, and I could feel the awkwardness settle between us like a heavy fog. The once-promising atmosphere had soured, and I struggled to find the right words to salvage the situation.

"I didn't mean to come across that way," I replied softly, trying to maintain a calm composure. "I apologize if I gave you the wrong impression. I'm here to get to know you better, not to boast about my life."

Sungho's expression softened slightly, but the tension remained. We exchanged a few more forced pleasantries, but it was evident that the spark that had initially ignited our interaction had fizzled out. The conversation became strained, punctuated by awkward silences and forced smiles.
