009 : victory

I felt a flutter of excitement in my stomach, but it was mixed with a tinge of nervousness. Jake and I walked side by side, our friends' chatter filling the hallways around us. I could hardly contain my anticipation for PE class; after all, I had heard so many stories about Jake's competitive spirit and his infamous victory dance.

We arrived at the gym, the smell of polished wood floors and athletic gear filling the air. The instructor, Mr. Lee, greeted us with a warm smile, announcing that we would be playing indoor soccer today. My heart raced at the thought of being on the same team as Jake.

"Alright, everyone! Let's split into teams!" Mr. Lee called out, and before I knew it, we were lined up, picking teams. Thankfully, Jake and I ended up on the same side along with Hanni, Jay, and a couple of other classmates.

"Let's win guys," Jake said, his eyes gleaming with determination. I nodded, trying to muster some confidence, but my shyness tugged at me, making me feel small.

The whistle blew, and the game began. I quickly found myself immersed in the fast-paced action, darting around the gym, passing the ball to Hanni, and trying to outmaneuver our opponents. But I couldn't shake the nerves. I could see Jake effortlessly weaving through players, his focus unwavering.

Every time he got the ball, I felt the energy in the room shift. With each goal we scored, my heart raced, but so did my anxiety. Jake was so competitive, and I worried about letting him down.

Finally, in the heat of the moment, I found myself in a position to score. I took a deep breath, my palms sweaty, and kicked the ball toward the net. To my surprise, it soared past the goalie and into the goal! Our team erupted in cheers, and I felt a rush of exhilaration mixed with disbelief.

"Yes! That's how we do it! Good job Eun-bi." Jake shouted, his competitive side shining through. I smiled shyly, feeling a sense of accomplishment but also a little overwhelmed by the attention.

As the game continued, our team worked seamlessly together, passing the ball and anticipating each other's moves. With each goal we scored, Jake's excitement grew. The final whistle blew, and we emerged victorious, our team having scored an impressive 5-2 against the others.

"Great job, everyone!" Mr. Lee clapped his hands, and our team gathered for a quick huddle, laughter, and high-fives exchanged all around.

"Wait for it." Jay comes from behind me, nudging my shoulder. "He's about to do it."

In the heat of the moment, Jake couldn't contain his joy. He jumped up, throwing his arms in the air and doing a little spin before breaking into his signature victory dance—a goofy, exaggerated series of moves that made our group laugh. I couldn't help but giggle, but as soon as I caught his eye, my laughter faded, and my cheeks flushed a bright pink.

Jake froze in his dance, his face turning crimson as he realized I was watching. "Oh..." he muttered, and he quickly dropped his arms, trying to regain some semblance of coolness. "I swear I do it subconsciously..."

I managed to let out a laugh, my voice softer than I intended. "I'm excited to see that more often."

His embarrassment turned into a shy smile, and he rubbed the back of his neck, his gaze darting away for a moment before finding mine again. "Yeah yeah...," he sighed, his eyes sparkling with a mix of mischief and vulnerability.

As we stepped off the court I realized I learned a lot about Jake today. He was competitive, silly, and undeniably charming, and I couldn't help but feel drawn to him, even through my shyness. If I hadn't met him a few weeks ago I would've never been here with all these people. I guarantee I would've just stayed in my own shell. I'm glad Jake is allowing me to have a chance to live my high school dream.

As we left the gym, I felt a rush of happiness mixed with a hint of nervousness, surrounded by laughter and new friendships.
