He was standing there under a crystal chandelier, nursing a glass of tequila and soda. Looking like he was done with all the small talk. His smiles that were usually warm and inviting were wearing thin.

He caught your eye from the across the room. A silent plea for any excuse to be done with this event radiating out from his dilated pupils. You knew that look when he gave it to you.

"I think Josh has had enough." You mentioned, leaning in to the pillar in your sequinned cocktail dress.

Adam had pulled out his shirt from around his waist and was tipsy on red wine. His arm around you intimately as he pressed his nose into your hair.

"Josh has never had enough." He slurred, "He'll be chewing their ears off until dawn, mark my words."

It had been the sort of evening that been saturated in shmaltzy revelry. Tuxedo's and finery with hors d'oeuvres served on shiny silver platters. The sort of evening that normally you'd avoid, but the opportunity had presented itself and you were trying to open yourself up to new opportunities in lieu of the fear which usually prevented you.

"I think he needs saving." You surmised, watching his eyes drift over to where you stood instead of focusing on the small group of people lingering around him.

"Should I go over there?" He asked, suddenly nervous and coy.

The slit in your cocktail dress opened as you stepped aside, wrapping a careful hand around your old friend's arm.

"I'll go." You offered, "He's been giving me the eyes for a while now, why don't you go to the bar and get us some more drinks?"

You'd known Adam since childhood. A shared love of music driving you both into the Nashville scene after High School.

Adam, with his penchant for creation and motivation to move others, had used inheritance money to start up his own studio. Becoming one of the foremost places to record music in the entire city.

You had chosen a different path. One that had brought you to the one door that had opened an entirely new world to you. One that you hadn't wanted to open, but you'd seen him on the other side of it.

Josh. With his sunshine aura and penchant for making you feel like you could achieve anything if you just let the universe be your guide. If you just let love in. And ever since that day you'd been wrapped in a blanket of his unwavering certainty that you were beautiful and capable.

You'd bonded over the custom made jumpsuits you'd crafted for him. Becoming friends after he sought you out to bring his vivid and wild visions to life. You'd been afraid, at first, to work with such a high profile client. But something within you had made you say yes to him.

Something which you'd been unable to stop doing ever since you met. His ability to elicit an agreement from you was a true talent. He commissioned clothing, jewellery and pieces of art work to hang in his Nashville outpost on the edge of the city. And slowly, you'd entangled each other in your lives.

"Excuse me." You said, feigning confidence as you took a stride into the lion's den. "I need to take this beautiful man away from you for a moment, please."

You danced him out of there with savoir faire. Whispering a sultry you're welcome into his cuffed ear as you guided him over to the bar. His hand came to rest at the small of your back, where your dress was open to the curve of your waist.

The unexpected touch made you shiver.

"Truly, you look stunning tonight." He offered, keeping his hand at the small of your back as he took a salt rimmed glass from Adam.
