"So!" Ink grinned over at his Error, a satisfied expression on his face. His body was pent up with magic, practically vibrating. He could feel himself changing, Error changing. But they had each other. And that was all that matters. "What do we do now, Glitchy?"
Sighing, Error rubbed the bridge of his nose, his glitches stronger, full of nervous energy, yet felt better and calmer. "I doubt we can stay here. Fate and Destiny will have had allies. And they will be after us." His gaze wandered away. This place where they were was like an in-between world. They can see into their multiverse, but also all the other multiverses around them. It was a breathtaking sight.
"It's beautiful, isn't it?" Ink stood next to him, gazing at the multiverse with Error like they used to watch Outertale's skies together. There was a comfortable silence until Ink broke it. "Hey, why don't we live there?"
"'There'? Which one there, Ink? The omniverse is large and has many multiverses for us to live in."
"No, that's not what I mean!" And as he spoke, Ink looked at Error as if he were a toddler who needed everything explained. "I meant between the worlds! Nobody would look for us there! There we can live in peace and find out what we want to do!"
"This is madness." Error replied immediately. "We would live in the Void, which can swallow us at any moment." Then he stopped himself and shook his head with a smile. "Sure, why not? Nothing about this whole thing isn't insane. Also, we can at least see if we can die in the Void or not."
Ink grabbed his hand enthusiastically. "Let's go! I want to see everything before we find a good place to settle down!" And without further waiting for Error's reply, Ink pulled him through that thin barrier that had cut the Omniverse off from them.
They were greeted by a cold feeling. But not cold enough to freeze the marrow in their bones. More like walking into a cold house that hasn't had a fire for a long time. Not that either had any real sense of what warm and cold really is.
"So we're not dying." Error said after wandering around the void for a while. "Kind of disappointing. The Void always seemed somehow... special. But even now it can't kill us." Not that Error really wants to die. But he won't fight back if it comes to that either. Has he lived long enough, in his opinion. When it's over, then it's over. He will not regret his life.
"But you also know that we were made not to be able to die. There's a good chance the Void was already factored in so we can't escape." Maybe Ink was right. It certainly sounds like Fate and Destiny denying them even death by the Void.
But even if that was the case, it played into their hands now. Who would look for them here? Who would think they would be crazy enough to settle here?... Maybe Nightmare. He always had a sense of just how insane Error really was. The octopus also mostly kept him from his crazy ideas. But not from this one and not from any future ones either.
"I...miss our old multiverse." It felt odd to admit that, but it was the truth. He would never again be able to help the gang with their pranks, help Blue keep improving his tacos, or watch Red getting upset that he keeps stealing his chocolate. The little things that made his everyday life better.
"But we can't go back." Error could hear something like regret in Ink's voice, probably also thinking about all the things he couldn't have anymore. "But it's for the best for everyone. If we stayed there, we'd put a target on everyone. And to see them die... no." Ink shook his head, eyes closed. "I prefer the isolation."
To lift the spirits a bit, Error Ink pushed forward? Directions were difficult to determine here. But in any case, he pushed him into an empty, but quite large space between two multiverses. "Well if you want to isolate yourself then start building our home. I think real ground is still better than a thread island."
From the grin on his face, Ink knew exactly what Error was alluding to. But just a floating house wouldn't work. And if he wants a little bit of Outertale here by living on floating islands, then so be it. A little bit of home was probably still allowed.
"Do you think we should get new names?" Ink suddenly interjected as he was in the process of getting the island to a good size.
"Why the hell do you think that?" Error looked over at Ink in confusion, stopping to spin a tight cord from the main island to the small side islands.
"Well, the other multiverses will certainly already have an Ink and Error." Humming, Ink drew a tree that appeared to Error like the tree from Dreamtale. "It would only be confusing if we were suddenly also called Ink and Error."
"I guess you're right." It would cause more confusion than it already does. "But you can't choose my name!"
"Naw, but Error!" Ink looked at him pleadingly. "I have such good ideas!"
"You're sometimes worse than Asgore at naming things!"
"Fine!" Ink puffed out his cheeks, offended. "What will your name be then?"
"String." Plain, simple, easy to remember. Error liked it!
"And you call me bad at naming!" Ink giggled and clutched his stomach, a twinkle in his eyes that made Error clear that he'll hear this more often now whenever Ink disagreed with him.
Now offended himself, he crossed his arms over his chest and looked at Ink expectantly. "Oh yes!? What kind of name do you call yourself?"
"Easy!" Oh, Error wanted to smack Ink on the face for that smug look, like Error should already know what he's going to choose. "It's Hollow!"
He didn't hit Ink. But only because it briefly surprised him. "Isn't that better?! I'll at least stick to something obvious, why the hell are you alluding to your soullessness?!"
Grinning, Ink leaned forward, Error actually noticing how much they were changing. Ink had grown. He hadn't come close to his size yet, but he was somehow certain that it wouldn't be long till they were around the same height...
"Very easily! It will be a warning to everyone. There will be nothing that will stop me should someone harm what is mine." The grin Ink wore was one that might have once made him uncomfortable. But now that blank look in his eyes and that too-wide grin had become something that was just Ink. Just another of his faces.
"You stupid possessive idiot..." Sealing their mouths with a kiss felt good. Was it a milestone for their freedom, for a future in which they are no longer forced into anything.
And for a home that they will make.
Together.
