"Why does this town have a twighlight filter?"

The wheels of the minivan start to rattle more and more as the long ride slowly comes to an end. Thank goodness. The stuffy air and the weird radio station playing the same old songs was making the already nauseating trip even worse.

The road now consists of mostly pebbles and dirt- a perfect foreshadowing of what's the you were headed, was like.

The woman behind the steering wheel- your social worker- constantly threw you concerned and sympathetic glances through the rear-view mirror, which you promptly ignored.

She wasn't really sorry for what happened, you knew that. Your abusive dead-beat parents ending up in prison for some petty crime should've been a celebration for you.

You would've finally be free from them and would've gained the peace you deserved, even if just for a couple of years.

But no, of course people only remembered about the existence of neglected children, when it was the most inconvinient time for it. The court quickly decided that the closest living relative should take custody of you. Unfortunaly the only relative of both of your parents, who was willing to take the offspring of these two, was your uncle.

Now, you never knew that man. Not really. You had some very blurry memories of him visiting once or twice. One of them being christmas, where he got you this amazing dollhouse.

Too bad your father smashed it in pieces a week later, when in his usual drunken state. You really liked that toy...

But back to the topic. Your parents had screwed up massively and because of that you were now shipped off to the middle of nowhere, where this uncle of your's lived. Who even wanted to live here? They had been driving for hours now and haven't encountered another car.

You sigh, squirming in the seat. It's uncomfortable, but the windows were broken and sealed shut forever.

"Oh, are you not feeling well, [name]? Just look out of the window, then it get's better", The social worker speaks in that condenscending tone.
"Look at these trees- I bet you didn't have these in the old place. Isn't it exciting to see something new?"

If it weren't for the car sickness, you would have surely tried to punch her square in the face, or more realistically, just cursed her out. But you were a sentence away from vomiting, so you stayed quiet.

Luckily the woman quickly gave up on her attempt to 'cheer you up' and the rest of the ride was spent without any conversing.

Just as you were about to fully drift off into sleep, the car hits a big bump, waking you up immediately.

Upon looking out of the window, you notice that you had arrived. The town of Logstedshire, as the old sign at the paved road said, turned out to be just as you had imagined it- old and weird.

The awful weather painted the streets with the little houses a depressing grey tone and made the town far away from civiliasation look even more uncanny than it should be.

You gulp nervously at the unreadable stare one of the locals gives you, as you pass on the main road. He could clearly tell you weren't a local, by the bright-coloured car you drove in. Whatever his thoughts about that were, he didn't seem too happy about the new arrival.

"And here we are! Your new home for the while. Are you excited to see your uncle again?" Asks the woman in the front. You wonder how she stays so oblivious to the uneasy mood around them. Maybe she's just stupid-

The door on your side slams open, ripping you out of your mindless state.

"Come on, [name]! It's rude to make people wait. Drop the atitude and atleast try to make this work, okay?", she chews you out and gives you that annoying smile right afterwards. Well atleast the move here had one positive thing- you wouldn't have to deal with that lady anymore.

Reluctantly, you get out of the car and step onto the moist ground. Right as you do so, a giant flock of crows rises up into the sky from somewhere, hiding the last beams of the sun that peak through the thick layer of clouds, before they fly off.

It would've been a really cool coincidence, if it wasn't so creepy.

You get the trash bag and smaller backpack, where you threw in all your clothes and other stuff in, from the trunk. Despite not owning too many things, it felt pretty heavy. Maybe it was just tiredness that made you that way.

Or could be the cold surrounding you. This years summer was incredibly cold. In this region it seemed to be even worse. But other than the wind that gave you goosebumps and clattering teeth, and the wet ground that stained your [shoes of choice], it wad okay. Infact the fresh air was pretty much appreciated after the ride in the stuffy car.

You follow the social worker through the mud to the entrance of the house. It was a fairly big hut, which was distinctly seperated from the other houses, that stood in a much neater line, close to each other.

The woman makes sure that you clean your shoes best you can, at the doormat, before ringing the bell. It takes a while before footsteps approaching were heard. Welp, there it is...

The door is opened by a tall man with broad muscles, who looked intimidating. His scarred face with a cold expression alone would make anyone want to turn around and run. Another distinct feature about him, aside from the intimidating nature, was his hair. It was a long, pink braid, made with delicacy. It looked out-of-character on a man like him, but at the same time, somehow fit just right in.

"Hullo?" He speaks in a deep voice, regarding the two visitors on his porch.

"Mr Blade, good afternoon! My name is [generic name]. I am the social worker for [name][last name], your nephew/niece. You were informed about our arrival today, weren't you?"

The man seems to be confused for a second, but doesn't let his blank expression slip top much. "Right, right. Of course I was", he speaks, as if trying to convince himself more than the woman. "Come inside."

Right upon entering the hut you were able to guess two things- he was a hunter and lived alone. The first one was clear from the many antlers hanging from the walls, aswell as the coat with natural fur hanging on the hook near the entrance. The second was...it was more the vibe, really. You could hardly imagine the stoic and scary man, who acted so awkward upon people entering his house, being in a relationship.

"Uh...do you want tea?...or coffee?" Came the question finally, after the man managed to throw in a word, between all of the ramblings from the social worker and the silence on your side.

You had stopped at the window, decorated with coloured glass. It overlooked the fields of wheat, behind which tall trees formed a thick and dark forest. The sight mesmerized you. It made you curious of what was beyond the borders of this town...

"[Name]! Would you be so kind and join us in on the conversation?", the call of your social worker brought you back to reality once again. In a mere moment, the howl of wind and gentle melodies of otherwordly beauty were replaced by the wheeze of the kettle and clattering of dishes.

"Coming", you comment, clearing your throat. You make your way to the living room, where reality took place. But not before taking a last glance at the woods, where it like, from the depth of which, someone returned your glance. You didn't know how that thought made you feel, yet.
"I'm coming, one second!"

Not that you had any real choice in that matter. Because whatever it was, it had already spotted you.

It would be a shame, not to get to know you better...
