First thing I do when I wake up is opening my window no matter how cold it is and breathe in the fresh morning air. The fact that me and my grandma lived at the border of the forest was the reason why I loved to breathe in the cool morning air. It isn't contaminated with exhaust fumes. It's clear and you can practically taste the dew. But today was different. Like any other day I opened the window, but I wouldn't smell only the dew, there was the smell of a foreign, however intoxicating flower. This definitely wasn't normal. I knew every little smell within my woods and my garden. I quickly went to my floors bathroom and got changed. I ran downstairs and opened the back door to the garden. I stepped on the slightly wet grass. In the shadows of the woods I saw a pair of golden animal eyes. I blinked and when I looked there again the eyes were gone. I must have imagined them. I breathed in and the foreign smell was gone just like the eyes. It really was weird so I quickly went back into the house. As I passed the kitchen I heard my grandma humming whilst cooking breakfast. I stayed in the door and watched her how she gracefully baked pancake after pancake. I had learned cooking from her and could say proudly that I was good at it. "Dear do you need anything or do you just wait for me to finish the breakfast?" I heard the amused voice of my grandma. I walked by her side and kissed her cheek. "No, I just appreciate the sight of my grandma cooking for her poor little grandchild" I laughed. She finished the last pancake and put them on the table with maple syrup and honey. She knew I loved the taste of maple syrup with honey on my pancakes. I dug into my food until my hunger was satisfied. I thanked my grandma for her breakfast and went to my room to get my book that I was reading at the moment. I went to the garden, took out a comfy chair and sat down. The book I was reading was Little Red Riding Hood. It wasn't my favorite fairytale but it was a good one. My favorite was The Little Mermaid by Hans-Christian-Andersen. I just loved the story. As a little child I believed those stories. Now that I'm adult I know how stupid I was. There will never be such things as fairytales. I stayed in the garden until sunset. I then went inside just to be greeted with the smell of asparagus cream soup. I went to my room to put my book away. After that I went to the bathroom to wash my hands. When I was in the kitchen, I sat down at the dining table. The food stood on the table. My grandma sat down across from me. We always ate in silence, because she knew I didn't like talking when I'm eating. We finished and I said goodnight. In my bed I tossed and turned because I felt watched. I was too tired to stand up and look, if there really was someone. So I just stayed in bed still a bit uncomfortable. The time I fell asleep I was sure I heard a wolf's howl.
The next morning I fought against my inner will to open the window, because of the incident yesterday. I was sure that I was still being watched, even though I couldn't see him or her. "You're up, dear?" I heard my grandma asking in front of my door. "Yeah, I'm up. Can I ask you something?" I replied after I have gone to open my room's door. "You know you can ask me everything." She said. "We can go downstairs in the living room? It's much comfier there." I agreed and we went to the living room. I sat down on the sofa and she took a seat next to me. "What do you want to ask me?" She asked me. "I wanted to know, if you know anything of a pack of wolves here. I think I saw one yesterday and heard it howl." I saw the change of emotions on her face. First hope then incredulity, next was relieve. I couldn't pin point the reason for her feelings. "You know I always told you of vampires, fairies etc. The howl that you heard was a werewolf's howl. He probably found his mate." She said the old lines I knew so well, except the mate-part. I heard them so often and believed them when I was younger. Now I don't. "Stop with your stories. You know I don't believe them." My grandma sighed deeply. "I know." She said. "It is a waste of time trying to tell you it's real, isn't it?" I nodded she was right. I knew she thought I was the little girl she still saw but I wasn't. I was a strong independent young woman. I didn't believe her fairytales. Not anymore. "I'm going for a walk. Don't wait for me with dinner. Bye." I told her, pecking her cheek goodbye. 'Our forest', as I like to call it, had a path I always used for walks. It ended in a meadow, which was in the middle of the forest. Thankfully the walk only lasted about 15 minutes because I didn't like the thought of being so far in the woods. I constantly had the feeling of being watched. I knew that there couldn't be anything. I was the only one that knew of that meadow. As I stepped onto the soft grass I removed my shoes to feel the soft tickle between my toes. Laughter bubbled up from my stomach and burst through my mouth. I let out happy laughter and couldn't contain a smile. This place always made me unbelievable happy. I could be myself. I even had somewhat of a hiding place here. My grandma knew when I didn't show up for dinner I would be sleeping here. The temperature never seemed to go under 82°. That's the reason why it was always warm here. It could be winter outside but in here it was warm and cozy. The meadow was located under a big rock, so I didn't have to fear rain or something like that. It was like a cave, though it was open on three sides. It was like having a room in the woods underneath the bare sky. I loved it. The rock had a little hole in it where I hid a sleeping bag and a little bit of food. I wished I had someone I could trust so much that I would show him this place. Sure I had lots of friends, but they weren't that close to me like I would have hoped them to be. They were afraid to come to my house, because we lived that deep in the woods. I didn't really understand them with that. I pulled out my sleeping bag and laid it down onto the soft grass. I found a piece of bread and some cheese and ate it for dinner. After that I laid down and closed exhausted my eyes and let the sleep take over.
I opened my eyes and it was still dark. I didn't take my watch, so I couldn't look what time it was. I looked around just to see two golden-brown eyes shining in the dark. They were the same eyes I saw yesterday. I backed away until my back hit the rock behind me. As I looked up I saw that the wolf stood a few feet away from me. I could tell that it definitely was the wolf I saw yesterday because of his eyes. The wolf took one step forward and I shrunk together to be as little as I could make myself be. It was a reddish color that looked good with the sun shining through it. I made the guess that it was a male because he was pretty big and just looked like a male and no female. The wolf stood in front of me now. He moved his head near to my face and suddenly licked my cheek. I squeaked and wiped the saliva from my cheek. He just barked, which seemed like a laugh. "Don't laugh at me. It's disgusting." I said laughing, too. He then licked my face again. I laughed at him. "You can't stop, can you?" He shook his head just like he could understand what I was saying. "You're understanding me?" I asked unsure of what to think. He nodded his head. I took a few steps backwards because the fear swept over me again. The wolf lowered its head to demonstrate that it didn't mean any harm to me. I stayed on my spot and didn't move. He slowly crouched to me to not scare me off. Before he came to touch me, everything disappeared. I shot up from my lying position, just to find myself in the same place I laid before. The only thing that was missing was the wolf. I either must have imagined him or the whole thing has been a dream. I looked around and recognized the sun that was high enough for me to walk back to my house. I went back to my house and snuck into my room. In my bathroom I took of my dirty clothes and replaced them with clean ones, after I took a shower. To help my grandma preparing food I went downstairs. We made scrambled eggs because it was the easiest to make. The rest of the week went all the same. I was woken up by my grandma, and then I went downstairs to eat breakfast. I changed into my daily clothes, took some books outside and read them. The whole week I didn't go back to my safe place. The wolf still haunted me, even though every time I thought of him a warm feeling spread throughout my body. It scared me. I never felt anything like that before. It felt like an attraction that started to grow. But it couldn't be!
The night before my first day of school I had the urge to jump out of my bed, open my window and breathe in the air. I fought against this urge but my body moved on its own. I walked to my window, opened it and took a deep breathe. Everything I smelt was familiar. I recognized every smell. There wasn't that foreign smell. Relieved I breathed out. I went back to bed without closing the window; before I fell asleep I heard the faint howl of a wolf. The piercing ringing of my alarm woke me up. I was grumbling and didn't want to stand up but I had to. I wasn't that kind of girl that slept in and then put tons of make-up in my face. I only did make-up if I had time. If I hadn't I wouldn't put make-up on. I stood up and made my way to my bathroom. I did my normal morning routine. For breakfast I ate bread with jam and an apple. My grandma wasn't up yet, because she stood up at 9 o'clock and it was 7 am. School started at 8:30 am and I had a 45 minutes ride with the car my grandma gave me as a gift. I got to school twenty minutes before it started. I started to stroll over the campus to find my first class. "Do you need help?" A quirky girl suddenly asked. I looked up and was met with two warm brown eyes. "That would be nice. By the way, my name's Mika" I said thankfully. "Nice to meet you. I'm Maya. I can show you to class and you can eat lunch with me and my friends, if you want to." I smiled and took the offer. I showed her my schedule and she brought me to my class. All the way there she blabbered about school, her friends, her likes and dislikes, her boyfriend and a lot of other things I couldn't remember. I didn't talk much. I was more the quiet type that listened to the things others told me. She was a very funny girl and talked much. Maybe we could become friends. She had something motherly, too. It made her character friendly and crazy at the same time. The first few periods were a bit boring, but I tried to concentrate on them. What really confused me was that this intoxicating smell, I smelt at my house, was here, too. I was drawn to this smell and could hardly resist it. When lunch bell rang I walked out of my classroom and was met with Maya waiting for me. "Do you smell that, too? This smell of flowers." I asked her. She looked at me like I was crazy. "Are you sure?" She asked me unsure of what to think. I nodded slowly. "I can't smell it sorry." She answered. We went to the cafeteria. She walked to a table where a boy sat. She walked up to him and kissed him. Maya turned to me and introduced him to me. "Mika, this is my boyfriend Heath." Then she introduced me to him. "Heath, this is Mika. She's new here." "Hey, nice to meet you." I said to him smiling, while holding out my hand. He shook it and smile at me, too. Suddenly the faint smell that had always been in the back of my mind got stronger. I turned around and was greeted with a pair of golden-brown eyes. Shocked I took a few steps backwards. The person, whose eyes I saw, was tall. About 6 feet something. He had short reddish hair, was very muscular and fit and his face was god made. I have never seen such a handsome and gorgeous boy ever in my entire life. "Hey, I'm Caleb Castillo. Are you new here?" He spoke with a soft yet rough voice. I just looked at him in awe until Maya gave me a love tap. "Uh...Uhm...Yeah. I'm new here. I'm Mika." I stutter. There was it again. My stutter that I lost during talking to Maya and Heath. He smiled at me and then sat down next to Heath. I sat down next to Maya. "I don't know if it's a bit strange saying that, but I really like your hair." She complimented me by the time I was seated. "Thank you." I replied whilst going through my short pink-purple hair. I took a glance at Caleb. He was really into a conversation with Heath. I could pick up some words like "...smells good..." or "...she's gorgeous..." But what really caught my attention was when Heath asked Caleb, if I was his mate. I first had to think about some words that came with the word 'mate'. There was mating, werewolf, howling and full moon. "You're werewolves?" I whisper-yelled at Maya. She looked at me shocked. "How do you know?" She asked. "I'll tell you elsewhere. Take the boys, too. I want to tell all of you."*******************
