On the 31st of July 1980, two babies were born into a world at war. Magical Britain has been at the mercy of the Dark Lord Voldemort. The light side was losing hope, and true happiness was scarcely seen. But on this day, the world seemed to brighten. The two babies had contrasting looks and personalities, but together they brought joy back into many lives.
The baby boy, named Jamie, had dark auburn hair with joyful hazel eyes. He loved the attention he got and seemed to subconsciously try to outshine his sister in everything. All of the adults found this quality adorable.
The baby girl, named Dahlia, had beautiful black curly hair, and vivid green eyes full of curiosity for the world. She was calm and didn't seek attention the way her brother did, but she still brought smiles out of all who saw her.
Not long after they were born, dumbledore delivered the news of the prophecy to the potters, resulting in them going to hiding, using the fidelius charm on their little house in godric's hollow, instead of using one of the unplottable potter properties with ancient wards surrounding them, purely because dumbledore told them to. He also advised them to make Peter the secret keeper because 'Sirius would be far too obvious of a choice'.
For the first year of her life, Dahlia was fascinated by everything. She was oddly quiet for such a young child, not in the habit of screaming when she wanted something. She seemed to have a certain presence of mind that was very uncommon in kids her age, always impressing those around her with her ability to learn. She even started talking not long after their first birthday, her first word being a clumsy form of 'padfoot', making said man start crying very dramatically out of pure happiness. This attention towards Dahlia evidently made her brother jealous. He quickly stole everyone's attention with his tried and true method of having an ear shattering tantrum.
Another example of Dahlia surpassing expectations is when she started showing control over her magic in ways never before seen in babies. She very rarely had bouts of accidental magic anymore and could often be found using her magic to summon toys to her or to tidy things away. No one had an explanation for it, but they certainly weren't complaining, except for Jamie of course, they all knew she would continue to be outstanding as she grew up.
Everything changed on the night of 31st October 1981.
James and Lily had just settled down on the sofa downstairs after putting the children to bed when they heard footsteps outside, already making them panic because their friends knew to notify them before coming to visit unless it was an emergency. Before they even had time to grab their wands off the table, the front door was blown open. The face that greeted them was the stuff of nightmares; serpentine features curled into a snarl as he pointed his wand at them and stunned them before they could even think to move.
Stepping over their motionless forms, he made his way upstairs to the room that clearly held the children, following the sound of a baby's cry.
When he entered the room he saw two cribs, inside of a very Gryffindor themed nursery, making him cringe at the horrid colours. The two babies momentarily shocked him with their stark differences. It was the boy who was crying, reminding the Dark Lord why he hates children. However, when he looked toward the other crib he saw a pair of green eyes staring at him, shining with interest, the colour reminiscent of one of his favourite curses. But that wasn't what intrigued him. No, he was much more interested in the power he could feel radiating from the small child, palpable waves coming from her making the room gloriously suffocating in their wake. Voldemort had always been magically sensitive, a gift he is grateful for now; it has made his job significantly easier than he anticipated. He knows there is no chance that this girl is not the prophecy child. Especially not when the only two other candidates were bumbling buffoons in the form of babies, with very mediocre magical potential.
