"And that makes it a total of 18 lakhs INR or 1.8 million USD in profit. We need to cut on the import expenses on the dock and almost 70k is left to be paid in wages of the men working for you, excluding the bodyguards. Also, I think it'd be better off to search for another distributor for the organs selling since this one's not paying much on top of providing late payment by six weeks now. I still can't find any transaction records before February this year", I said in a breath.
It's been a few weeks since I started working as an accountant for Uncle's gang. It helps that it's not a big gang but amount of unnecessary expenses was troublesome to account for since all of the men including Uncle were absolutely illiterate with most of them not being able to write their own names even in their native languages.
Uncle had reluctantly provided me all the records and receipts of all the major transactions till date and asked to keep a track of all their income and expenditures especially the drug deals and organ selling since these were the easiest to exploit. In Uncle's opinion, it was better to have someone, he knows personally and can manipulate easily, as the accountant since they would be much less likely to steal and escape.
"We can't change our distributor now. Also the docks are asking for a raise from this month. And don't try to fish for the missing records, they were used as a trade-off for the drug distribution rights ticket with Kankasher. If you need anything else Keshav will here to help", said Uncle as he got up to leave for a meeting. Keshav was an elderly man with a characteristic long beard till his naval region. He pulled a chair beside me and plopped some huge files on my table before sitting down. I had requested Uncle to explain the hierarchy and details about all the gangs involved. Uncle had complied but he had asked Keshav to supervise me during that time.
"The pink one is for all the information about the different gangs all over Mumbai. The yellow is specifically dedicated to Kankasher and the orange is for the four gangs of the East including Sewri", said Keshav while opening the old, huge, moth-eaten files to show me their content. It hadn't missed my notice how Uncle had records of his fellow eastern district gangs which went to prove that no one really ever trusted each other.
There was a total of 10 functional gangs in Mumbai. Originally it had been 14 before Kankasher emerged in the central Mumbai and conquered many small operating gangs all while violating the peace treaties that were previously established by their predecessors. Entire Mumbai was further subdivided into smaller districts. In the east we had Uncle, Shinde, Belrai and Kantadamu. In the south we had Mazagaon and Malabar Districts under Uttam Bhadoria. Mrinal Surve looked over Kamathipura while Gautam Patil managed Mandvi. Further south Brikhnera Kamble managed Colaba District but it was a very small and not well-connected gang so no one was bothered to keep much dirt on him. Then in the east we had Bandra controlled by Manovar Gayakwad. Bandra has a port which oversees all the import and export of the state, making it the most vital and most desired position of all. Now for the central part, we have Kankasher ruling over Dadar, Wadala and Worli Districts before Sewri managed by Chaurasia joined his gang, making it the largest reigning gang till date. There were numerous rumors that Kankasher was planning an attack on Bandra in hopes of taking it under control, much to the horror of both the southern and eastern gangs. Hence everyone wanted to take him out before he made his influence even stronger.
There was an extra section of the file dedicated to all his illegal businesses, his black money along with all the offshore account details and even the shell companies that he frequented. I took in all the information with as much clarity I could and took out a paper to write notes and draw a rough overview of all the hierarchy patterns. I made sure to write it in French to make it much more difficult for anyone else to understand. All those nights school classes and online videos were finally proving to be of some help.
