(A Week Later In Tae’s Office)
Taehyung sighed for the umpteenth time that day.
The day had started off fine, but had progressively become worse and worse as the lunch hour rolled by.
He’d been so engrossed in reviewing the turnover from their newest international venture, that he didn’t even notice that it was almost closing time for the company workers.
He got up to go on his evening round, but the ring of his desk phone halted him in his tracks.
Taehyung’s blood ran cold.
That line was so private, it had very few numbers registered on it, and even fewer knew the actual number.
It was almost like an emergency phone for his family and his close friends, and Ara’s…. He halted his thoughts and rushed to pick up.
“Hello?”
“Mr. Kim, this is the city hospital. Your daughter fainted again, we've taken her to the doctor you’ve listed as her pediatrician, please come soon,” the voice on call said hurriedly.
“I’ll be right there. Thank you,” Taehyung replied.
Trying not to tense up, he took his keys from the table and rushed out the door.
He passes by Soobin’s desk and gives him a meaningful glance. Soobin nods back and he’s immediately on the phone, just as he’s been instructed to do, in case of emergencies.
Taehyung takes the private elevator that leads directly to the parking lot.
Once the doors closed, he couldn’t stop his left foot from nervously tapping against the tiled floor. He closes his eyes, chewing on his lower lip.
Ara had been Taehyung's best friend Hana's daughter. Even though she was elder to him, they were friends since childhood and Taehyung had been overjoyed when Hana had got married to the love of her life.
He was even more hyped when she had Ara. But his joy was short-lived when a month later, Hana and her husband got into a fatal car accident, resulting in Ara being orphaned. Before she passed however, Hana had made Taehyung promise her that he would take care of Ara like his own child and signed over her parental rights in her will, while on her deathbed.
She trusted no one in her immediate family because she always felt that her family kept secrets.
So, once he’d completed the adoption proceedings, Taehyung, then barely nineteen, had become a single father of a new born baby girl. He gave her his family name to protect her and named her Kim Ara.
The elevator stopped with a ‘ding’ and Taehyung was out before it even fully opened. From the corner of his eye, he noticed Jimin making his way towards him.
On his free-er days Jimin usually visits him and they order in or go out.
But today was anything but free and when Jimin waved at him Taehyung totally ignored him, and continued to dash towards the parking lot.
