Aria took her first steps into Mangrove Lane. It was a quaint little house with three stories. The outside was bright white, though rusting around the edges.

It rested on the crest of a hill, nowhere else in sight. The nearest house was out of view. It felt so isolated. Aria rubbed her chilly arms and took her first steps inside the house. The air was lukewarm and settled like an uncomfortable weight on her back.

Her eyes glazed over as she caught sight of the family. Or what she had expected would be a family. Instead, a bony faced woman and her portly husband sat at the dining table. The woman's eyes narrowed on Aria as she took her in. Fourteen years old, with red hair tucked into a pony tail behind her back.

Round cheeks, youthful eyes, Aria was surely not the steady hardworking mature young woman that the Turner family had in mind. But it was too late. She was theirs, whether they wanted her or not.
