A few hours after I was born, a code was burned into my left eye. That's how it is for everyone. Every code describes what year we were born in and the date. As we get older, it's modified. When we change, so does the code. The code is basically an identification or qualification card you always have with you. My name is Aulora Emery. I am the daughter of Alaric Emery and Macaria Sahar. In our society, strength and intelligence are the most important things. So much so that when we turn 15, it is required by law to participate in the founders game. I've always looked forward to the game, not really knowing the true nature of it. My brother and I's fifteenth birthday just passed and there is one week until preparation and registration which starts on January 1st. I can feel the nerves setting in.

January 1st

I was standing in line behind hundreds of well-dressed people. There were three lines, full of fifteen year old's waiting to be scanned into the games and gain their ability. The line was taking forever. I looked around and saw guards at each door and every 4 or so feet. Why are they standing guard? I thought. Sure, there are a lot of kids here, but I'm sure we're all disciplined – I take that back. A boy with blonde hair in the line to the left of  me  started punching a kid behind him. Some other people tried to stop it, but only got injured. Two of the guards finally decided that this had to stop and restrained the blonde haired boy. The guards forced his arms behind his back and leading him to the front of his line. Well that was a free pass. He gets to skip the entire line. I looked behind me at Alexander. My twin was fidgeting and looking around nervously. I grabbed his hand and looked him in the eyes. "It's going to be okay". My brother has anxiety, so in situations like this I try to help, but I really don't know how.

Eventually we were at the front of the line and I stepped forward. The women in front of me held up the scanner and pointed it in my left eye. There was a blinging light that burned my eye and I had to blink away the tears.

"Aulora Emery, head to the black and gold door on your left" the women directed. I looked at my brother and smiled briefly at him before I turned and headed to the only black door in the room. The others were green and red and blue.  The pounding of my heart as I approached matched the thump of my heels against the marble floors. I approached the black door with a golden frame and opened the door. Inside there were people sitting on the white couches and chatting lightly. The conversation was disguising the unease that filled the room. I looked at the people, everyone in this room had something in common. They were all nervous. Some hid it better than others.

I stood on the outskirts of the room and observed people. These are my teammates who will one day be my rivals. I can't let my guard down here, friends can't be made. They'll make me vulnerable. A girl in a green shirt and black leggings came to stand beside me. I stared at her and she returned my gaze. She had brown hair framing her heart shaped face and a freckles embellishing her cheeks.

" Hi, I'm Emilia" she said, extending her hand. I looked at it then back at her.

"Aulora" I responded flatly. She didn't take the hint. She smiled and asked all sorts of questions about me. Her cheerfulness was almost contagious. I answered most of the questions she asked but skirted around the ones that were too personal.  She was short, like me. probably 5'4 as I was only about an inch or two taller than her.

She continued to talk to me and I chatted with her absentmindedly until a person of authority came in. I stood at attention and waited. A few seconds after the person came in he was followed by the blonde boy who started a fight in the lobby. Everyone turned to stare at him. Many people looked away immediately because of the glare he sent them. I looked at Emilia for a second to see she was smiling at him, then frowned as she looked at the guards behind him. The guard holding the boy let him go and stepped to the side.

The person who entered before was standing at the front of the room and started talking. "Hello, I am your squad leader Cameron Ahmes. You can come to me with any problems or questions you have. Today I will be splitting you guys into your publicity pairs. We have deliberately chosen people who's personality will clash with your own in order to get you used to working with people you don't necessarily like. The two of you will go through mini challenges together and you will attend the ball together at the end of the month. The three pairs that have worked together the best will be awarded after the ball. when I call your name stand to the side of me  and wait for your partner. after you guys are together I will hand you your dorm numbers and schedule and you will go through that door" he pointed at the door behind us " and you will get settled in. your luggage is already in your dorms". Cameron started calling names and people stood and got their partner and dorm information. After about half the people in the room had left, he called my name. I walked up to the front and stood beside Cameron while he called my partners name " Drystyn Ahmes". The violent blonde slowly made his way to the front. As he walked towards me you could feel the confidence radiating off of him like light beams from the sun. I saw Emilia smiling brightly as she saw him coming to the front. He stopped in front of me and looked at Cameron. He held out his hand and looked at him blankly. Cameron gave him a look of warning and handed him our information. Drystyn looked at me and nodded for me to go ahead.
