As I make my way down the street, my head is filled with thoughts and worries about why my brother wanted me home so desperately and what it could mean. I try to think positively and tell myself that I'm just overthinking things, but I can't shake the sense of dread that is growing within me.
When I make it to the door I rush inside and see my brother sitting down with a concerned look on his face
"What? What is it just tell me Jali!"
"Promise not to freak out." he says, sounding nervous. "Promise" I say nervous
He takes a deep breath before continuing.
"I'm moving to New York to go to university"
my heart drops as the words sink in. Jali, my big brother, is leaving me...and it's all so sudden.
"First mom now you jali?"
"Mom died aisha! It's not the same" he says raising his voice
"I'm not ready for this!" I say screaming
my head and heart are filled with a mix of emotions, and i can't make sense of what's happening.
"but I'm ready Aisha." He says calmly
"You being an hour away was enough, now 8 hours? I can't do this jali!"
"Me and mamaw are the only family you have left!"
his eyes colden, resting on his face empty.
"don't say that." Jali says, trying to keep his voice calm.
I keep going, unbothered by the way my words may make him feel
"Why now?" i asks him finally, tearing up "Why do you have to move now, of all times?"
"I refuse to talk to you if you are going to talk to me like this!" He yells
"So be it! Get out!" I yell at him back
"Get out get out get out!"
