A chuckle echoed throughout the car, making me surprise that Mr. Chandler of anyone would make that sound. I could never get used to such a sound even if he laughed a thousand times.
"What's so funny that it makes you do something you rarely do, laugh?"
Mr. Chandler smiled. Now this was getting unnatural and creepy. "Its you my dear. Always trying to catch on to my plans before I even create them. Mr. Stone I can assure you, can and will be alright as long as he does not make any wrong moves."
"That is what I am afraid of. Mr. Stone is notorious for always making the wrong move. I just ask that you leave him alone and ignore his mistakes. He is after all human."
"Ms. Red, although I hold you higher than many of my employees. I must warn you that your position does not allow you to give such advice to me. Do you understand?"
'I understand, sir." I sighed, looking out the window. Mr. Stone had better keep his distance or he will soon find himself in a body bag under his own company. The rest of the car ride was silent as I looked out the window, watching the numerous building fly by. Each one like steps, getting higher and higher as it played a dangerous game of which one can blot out the sky the most. I sighed as the buildings blocked out the sky. I missed the beautiful light blue color that only it seemed to have and the fluffy whiteness of the clouds that occasionally blocked it. Will this dangerous game ever end so that the people below could actually remember what the sky was like?
"Ms. Red is everything okay?" Mr. Chandler asked, a hint of worry in his voice.
"I just miss the sky and clouds that is all." I told him, expecting him to never understand as he was the main holder of the many buildings that blotted out the sky. I heard Mr. Chandler sigh as I expected him to begin his long lecture on how these many buildings that blot out the sky give many people jobs and keeps the economy running. He and many others are saving people's lives, this should surely should out way the small sacrifice they make of blotting out the sky.
Than I would sigh and tell him that, "I know that but can't you find a better way of doing that, that would allow us to keep seeing the sky? After all you see many other people finding other ways to not blot out the sky like owning farms or small buildings and business's. Those help the economy and give people jobs."
Than he would sigh once more and argue that, "Yes, you are surely right that all these small business's do help the economy and give people jobs but they can not exist without the bigger companies giving them the money that keeps them running."
After that I would give up and allow him to win.
He would never understand the role the sky played in our life like giving us light or making us gasp at the beauty of it or making plants and animals grow. But instead he surprised me by placing his hand on my shoulder.
I turned to look at him as he smiled lightly. "How about you can come and help me oversee the resort we are building in the Catskill mountains. There you can see the sky that you miss so much."
"When will that be?" I asked still trying to comprehend that he was actually being nice to me.
"We can leave as soon as you want but I would like to leave tomorrow. We will be staying there for a week or two. So I'll expect you to meet me here at 6 am in the morning. I'll pay you of course."
Normally, I would be groaning at having to wake up at 5 so that I can be ready by 5:45 so I can be there by 5:50, ten minutes early. Its best to be early when you have Mr. Chandler as a boss who might fire you for not being here all because you weren't here when he needed you. I might as well do it or he will fire me for not obeying him.
"Fine," I snapped out of it, remembering Mr. Stone. This was probably all about keeping me away from him.
Mr. Chandler smiled once more before he removed his hand and turned to look out the window.
I did the same but only after looking at the dashboard in front of us that beeped 5:00. Great, now all I have four hours to get everything done than pack. Thank you so much Mr. Chandler now, I'm short on time. I hope your happy.
