~ Ashton's P.O.V.~
I stopped and looked around the trees, smelling rain on the wind. Not rain. I breathed in deeper.
"A storm is coming," Grey spoke up.
"I give it a day," I replied dryly. Of course, the strength of the scent made me doubt that only moments later.
I began walking further into the trees, eying my surroundings carefully. Crescent Moon was known for ambushing those they feared to show dominance in their land and I was not going to risk falling victim to an attack. As I reached further and further into their territory the sound of a running river caught my attention. A soothing sound I rather enjoyed, so I neared the river's edge and sat on a large stone and closed my eyes. Breathing in deeply, I let my body relax with the sound of the river running and the smell of fresh water tickling my nose. Grey relaxed in my mind and laid down with a grunt, clearly dozing off. Sleep tugged at me, I wanted to give into it for a bit, exhaustion dragging at my bones and muscles. Just as I felt myself slipping into peacefulness the sweet scent hit my nose again.
"What is that," I muttered and looked around. The scent grew stronger and I felt the urge to find the source.
As I was about to rise to my feet to finally search for the source of the enticing scent, I spotted a very beautiful woman standing opposite of me, her gaze stuck on the flowing water. She had dark brown hair that I wanted to run my fingers through and I realized she was the one giving off that scent that captivated me. Her eyes met mine and I went stiff. A deep blue with gray bursts that looked like webs. I was entranced by her eyes and the word filled my mind. 'Mate'.
"Who are you," Her voice trembled and she backed up. "I'm sorry if I've-"
"Hush, pup," I ordered gently before walking across the river in careful strids. "You know as well as I that we are one."
Her eyes dropped and she swallowed. It was then that I noticed the bruises and scars along her body and the smell of wolfsbane filled my nostrils. An anger pierced my heart so fiercely that I stumbled and fought for air. What the Hell!
"Who hurt our mate!" Grey bellowed in my mind.
I felt my canines baring and flinched at the fear in her eyes. Taking a deep breath I calmed myself and reached for her hair, stroking it out of her face gently. Her eyes widened.
"Who did this, little mate," I asked her softly. What was happening to me? This need to keep her calm in my presence wasn't a feeling I was used to, I usually didn't mind the comfort of my peers.
Right when her mouth opened to speak, she was ripped from my reach violently. Anger coursed through me once more and I reached for her.
"I see you've found our missing Omega," A man smiled at me apologetically. "I'll get her to the packhouse and you can take your well deserved shower, Your Majesty."
Before I could speak, the man dragged my mate away with such ease that I felt pity in my stomach. Who hurt her... And from her scent alone, I knew she was no Omega. Not in a long shot.~Ember's P.O.V.~
Pain ripped through me as one of my assaulters threw me to the ground in my cell. I couldn't forget the look of love and worry in the other man's eyes before I was ripped away and his scent still lingered in my nose. Pine and The Moon Goddess had blessed me with another mate and I was being kept from him. And he was the Alpha King?
"Trying to seduce his Majesty, you filthy slut?" The man snarled at me.
"No!" I gasped. "He's my mate!"
A cruel laugh left his lips. "Yeah right! Now take your clothes off so I can relieve myself. I've been struggling all day."
I wanted to deny him, scream for help, but every time I did I ended up being raped after being beaten into the ground. I reached for the straps on my dress with the same feeling of hatred bubbling inside me. Why me...? I cried silently. Zara whined weakly from within the depths of my mind and felt my stomach churn with dread when I saw my second assaulter join the first. Tears sprung to my eyes and I knew what pain awaited me. Despite knowing Thomas felt each time these two used me and it hurt him physically, I still couldn't bring myself to find that as an upside by any means.
"What is she doing down here?" Thomas walked into sight. "I wanted her cleaning the rooms upstairs."
Both of the men groaned in disappointment and walked out, leaving me alone with Thomas. As much disgust as I felt for the Alpha, I silently thanked him.
"Fix your dress. Shower and change. The Alpha King is in company and you need to be presentable," He growled, tossing clean clothes at me. "Make it quick, you're helping ready the dining room and serve dinner."
Unknowingly saved by my cruel former mate, I hurried to the showers designated for Omegas. My body ached horribly and the bruises burned but I showered quickly, grateful for the water on my skin finally rinsing me of those hands. Drying and dressing quickly, I realized I was in black pants and a white blouse, long sleeved. Fixing my hair, I walked to the dining room and saw it was already set.
"Hurry up and get in the kitchen before the Alpha beats you," A woman hissed at me.
I gulped and ran into the kitchen, spotting Karly talking to one of the other Omegas. Her eyes locked on me and relief filled them.
"I thought they'd killed you!" She hugged me and I whined in pain. The bruises internally and externally raged and she jumped back.
"I wish they had..."
"I want to save you," Karly whispered. "I really do, me and Leon are trying to figure out how..."
My eyes widened. "Karly no..." Betraying your Alpha is high treason. If Karly and her mate helped me escape and were caught, they'd both either be killed or exiled and rejected from all packs for the worst version of betrayal.
"Leon and I are willing to-"
"No."
Karly looked heartbroken and I sighed, hugging her despite the pain my body was in. She took this as reassurance that I would be okay and part of me knew I would be. If what happened earlier was real, then the Alpha King was my second chance mate and that was protection if any.
"I have to serve dinner," I whispered and stepped away from her before grabbing a tray and following the other Omegas out.
The King sat at the head of the table opposite of Thomas and I avoided his gaze so I could focus on serving the food. I didn't want the table knowing just yet that I was no longer a member of their pack. I would not reject his Majesty no matter what pain I endured with him. Even if he rejected me, I would keep the bond alive until he wanted me.
"Ember," Thomas called my name and I walked to him steadily. "This, your Majesty, is Ember, our newest Omega."
I didn't dare look up as I smelled rage radiating off of the man that towered over all Alphas. "Yet she smells nothing like one," He replied in a cool tone, sending chills down my spine.
"I'm sorry?" Thomas laughed nervously.
The King stood and his eyes locked on Thomas. My body tensed as I realized what was about to unfold.
