Everything happened then. That's when my world collapsed. It was a race to the puck, and I got slammed into the boards. I felt this absurd, and excruciating pain in my knee. I heard a crack. I fell to the ice clutching my knee. I couldn't get up. I couldn't walk. I couldn't skate. I couldn't do anything but think, 'will I ever be able to play again?'.

I was taken out on a stretcher. My whole entire world felt dizzy as I was being taken off the ice. I could feel my breath growing heavy as my mind started racing.

I had been taken to the hospital where they took an x-ray of my knee. I impatiently and anxiously awaited my results in a separate room. I had a glass of water, which I finished fairly quickly. Soon after the doctor came into the room I was in.

"Amaya Lockhester?" He asked.

"Yes." I paused. "That's me."

He sighed. "We have unfortunate news."

My stomach dropped and a lump grew in my throat.

"You shattered your kneecap. You have to get surgery. It's likely you may never walk again." He said.

My eyes went wide. "What?"

He tapped his pen on his clipboard. "But.. I think your chance of walking again will be higher than others. It may be tough to get there, but I believe you can do it."

"Okay.. so if I'm able to walk again, will I ever be able to get back to hockey?" I asked, little hope.

"No." He sighed solemnly. "You'll put yourself at risk for re-injury."

That's when I felt it. My whole world ended. The one thing keeping me thriving.. keeping me happy.. it all came crashing down. It was all over.
