I walk down the stairs slowly, glass of Prosecco in hand, and feel a thrill rush through my body. Anxiety... or adrenaline? Finally, me, the perfect grades perfect hair perfect daughter, giving the old folks, and the whole town something unexpected. Okay, maybe I'm exaggerating and only trying a new style, but by the look on my mom and dad's face, maybe I'm not.
Parting through crowds, my mom furiously makes her way over to me. "Genevieve Verity Carter what on EARTH do you think you are wearing? And you're hair, all curly, you look like..." "you?" I finish, eyebrow raised. "Excuse me, Mom." I walk past her and come down to hug Elodie.
"Vieve girl, you look like a million bucks. I love your hair like that, I mean you look like your mom in her 90's party girl days!" I giggle, complimenting her back. She links her arm through mine, and we walk around the room.
The eyes, chico. They never lie.
A piercing blue gaze draws my attention. Even through this white button-up, his abs are carved through his shirt. He tugs at his tie, loosening it, and slowly walks to me. "Your friend's right. You clean up nice, Carter."
"And you can step away from her, Allen." Says Eloise, defensively. "Ellie, it's okay" I sigh. "What do you want, Alex? And a better question, what are you even doing here?" Ruffling back his hair, he leans over me, pushing a strand of hair back behind my ear. "I'm a busboy, Vieve. You know, bringing around drinks, little appetisers. Need anything, ladies?" He laughs. "You know, Carter, Carlson" he draws back away from me, acknowledging Eloise. "Not everyone's born filthy rich. I'm tryna get like you, Eloise. New money. That way I can run away from this fucking town and do something more, inspiring" he laughs.
"Oh yeah? Well, I thought you were settling in pretty well here. You know, kissing me and then redhead the day after. Real class act." I scold, Eloise jaw dropped behind me. "Wow Carter, I'm not going to lie, you're not what I expected."
And with that, he leans in to my ear. "And I think I like it."
