The sun was beginning to sink towards the horizon, staining the sky with shades of gold and pink as Kai parked his motorbike near the bus station where Lisa had alighted. He watched as she moved, with purposeful strides, into a store that sold camping gear. Suddenly, a child's voice cut through the quietude, "Gyeo Wool!" Kai's head snapped toward the sound, his heart pounding with hope. Instead, he was met with the sight of a young girl chasing her toddler sister, both laughing in innocent delight. When he turned back to Lisa's retreating figure, she had vanished. "Gone, again" he muttered to himself, frustration seeping into his tone.
Meanwhile, Lisa found herself navigating the labyrinthine trails of Bukhansan, heading towards Baegundae peak. Reaching a clearing, she paused to take in the serenity of the twilight hour. The day's last light glowed warmly against the tall trees, casting a dance of shadows on the snow-covered ground. A soft chuckle escaped her lips as she considered the story she had concocted. "A university student," she murmured to herself, her breath creating a misty cloud in the cold air. She couldn't help but shake her head at the lengths she was going to disguise her identity. She was now a silhouette disappearing into the mountains, leaving her past life behind. Her only company was the frosty winter air and the echo of her footsteps against the snow-covered path. Lisa despised the cold, and the evening chill was setting in. It wasn't just the physical discomfort that the cold brought with it. It was the memories, the flashbacks that seemed to accompany it. As a child, Lisa had intermittent flashes of an icy winter, snow crunching underfoot as she ran, her lungs aching from the icy air. A figure, shrouded in darkness, at her side, leading her away from something—or was it someone? Her adoptive parents had dismissed them as mere dreams, figments of an overactive imagination. Yet, she couldn't shake off the feeling that these were fragments of a forgotten past. As these thoughts swirled in her mind, a rustling from the nearby bushes brought her back to reality. Her heart leapt into her throat, preparing for danger, but relaxed when an elderly woman emerged instead, carrying a basket laden with berries.
The woman's eyes were bright with curiosity, and a comforting warmth emanated from her.
"Hello, young lady. Quite a chilly evening for camping, isn't it?" she said, her voice gentle.
Lisa found herself smiling, "It is, but I've always been a bit of an adventurer."
The woman laughed softly, "I see. Adventurers like you often find what they seek, don't they?"
The words hung heavy in the air, resonating with Lisa's deepest thoughts. She couldn't help but feel there was more to what the woman was saying. Before she could respond, the woman held out a handful of berries, "Here, take these. They'll keep you warm."
Lisa accepted them gratefully, "Thank you, I appreciate it."
As the woman turned to leave, she spoke again, "Remember, dear, the past is never just the past. Sometimes, it's a key to the future."
With that cryptic message, the woman disappeared down the path towards her village, leaving Lisa with a strange sense of foreboding and her mind swirling with questions about her own past. The stars twinkled overhead as Lisa found herself staring into the flames of her campfire once more, her thoughts racing into the depths of her forgotten past. She bit into one of the berries, the sweet juice offering a small comfort against the growing chill.
Back in the Aether realm, Kai presented the mysterious charm to Master Sebong. The Preceptor's eyes widened with unmistakable shock as he recognized a symbol he hadn't seen in centuries. Kai mentioned his brief encounter with the mysterious girl, who, unknowingly, held the charm. "Master Sebong," Kai began, a hint of desperation in his voice, "I have to verify this symbol. I need access to the forbidden library." Master Sebong's eyes darted up to meet Kai's. "No," he declared, dismissing him abruptly, concealing his anxiety under an impermeable guise.
Once Kai was gone, Master Sebong wasted no time in summoning General Tae, commander of the Aether army. An intense seriousness hung in the air, causing the General to straighten up immediately, noting the anxious line on Sebong's forehead."General, look at this," the Preceptor said, extending the charm towards him. As the General's eyes fell upon it, his stoic demeanor momentarily faltered, his eyebrows shooting up in surprise.
"The forgotten ones," General Tae acknowledged, his voice slightly edged. He looked at Master Sebong, awaiting an explanation.
The Preceptor nodded grimly. "Yes. It belongs to a girl in the mortal world who Kai encountered," he shared, letting the gravity of his statement sink in. The implications of such a revelation were not lost on the seasoned general.
The Aether realm had long believed the members of the Shadow Clan to be extinct, after being banished and cursed — erased from the Book of Records. The sudden appearance of the emblem carried ominous portents.
General Tae's stern face contorted in concern. "How did she come in possession of it?" he asked, furrowing his brow.
"We do not know, and that's what worries me," Sebong responded with a sigh, "This symbol has not been seen for centuries, it could mean many things, none of which bode well for us."
General Tae looked at the Preceptor, "What should we do now?"
"We need to find her," Master Sebong stated decisively, "But we have to be discreet. We cannot let the Supreme Preceptor know about this yet, nor the Spirit clan. Not until we have all the facts."
General Tae nodded, understanding the gravity of the situation. They decided to dispatch soldiers of the Aether army to the mortal world, their mission to find the owner of the charm who unknowingly held the key to a past everyone had tried to forget. The order was given under the utmost secrecy.
Meanwhile, Kai returned to Seoul, his mind buzzing with unanswered questions. The preceptor's evasiveness about the charm nagged at him. He could sense that Master Sebong was keeping something from him, something significant about the mysterious girl. His instincts propelled him back towards Bukhansan, his determination to find her intensifying.
On the other side of the mountain, Lisa found solace at Baegundae peak. With the hikers gone and darkness settled in, she pitched her tent under the glittering sky. The spectral voice of the mysterious figure from her dreams echoed in her mind, his cryptic instructions leading her here, towards a destiny untold. She whispered to the fire, "Who am I really?" The fire crackled in response, her question hanging in the chilling air. She mulled over her journey, her quest to unveil her real parents' identity.
Midnight cloaked the peak when a low, ominous rumble broke the silence. Stunned, Lisa watched as a portal tore through the space before her, spilling an otherworldly glow across the snow. Her initial shock turned into disbelief, then curiosity, as she wondered, "Is this a hallucination? Those berries were edible, weren't they?"
She stood, captivated, and terrified by the portal's pulsating light. Just as she took a hesitant step towards the portal, a voice ripped through the silence: "Stop!"
