CHAPTER TWENTY
Genevieve

THE NEXT MORNING I HAD DECIDED TO ring Robin, letting her know all about Columbia. I had not received my usual phone call from Steve in the morning, which was a little strange given he had phoned me every day since the new year, and he had made sure of it. I tried not to think about it, anyway, but it still plucked at my heartstrings. I dialled Robin's number.

"Hey, Robin!" I said cheerily on the phone. "You heading into the store today?"

"Hi Gen," she said kindly. "Yeah, heading in soon. You're coming in too, right?"

"Yeah," I nodded. "I think Keith said he's opening the store anyway so there's no rush."

"Apparently there's a new shipment in," Robin said. "There's a goddamn shipment every day."

I laughed, tying my shoes up. "Do you wish you were still scooping ice cream?"

"Actually, yes," Robin laughed. "I'd rather be giving samples to bossy children than dealing with Keith's continuous lectures on The Godfather."

I laughed. "Ugh. He's always trying to explain the plot of it to me, like I don't already know. He's so condescending with it too. Does he not know Film Studies will be my minor in Columbia in the fall?"

"Oh yes! You go there soon. God, it feels different on the other side of Christmas, doesn't it? Closer."

"Yeah," I said, thinking of Steve and I and long distance relationships. "They sent out the modules that are being offered there in the fall."

"Oh yeah, Steve said," she added. "By the way, have you heard from him? He said he would ring me this morning and let me know if he could give me a lift to work."

"No, I haven't heard from him," I said. "He didn't call me and he normally does."

"Do you think he's with Dustin or something?" Robin asked.

"I don't know. This is so unlike him."

"He'll be okay. It's dingus. He's probably away to buy more hair products or something," Robin replied, trying to make the air a little lighter.

"Yeah," I laughed, but I wasn't feeling happy. "I'll pick you up, Robin. See you later."

"Bye, Gen."

We hung up, and I stared at the phone for a moment. What was going on with Steve? I sighed. Then, fear took over. I told him about Columbia yesterday. Was he feeling okay? Was it freaking him out? It did feel closer this side of Christmas, like Robin had said. I rubbed my head. I needed to talk to him. I picked up my car keys but just as I did, the phone rang. I picked it up.
