40 CENTURIES EARLIER
Year: 5136
The sound of the bombs and gun shots where heard even underground. This war has gone on for 100 years each day more people were killed. The population of our sacred Earth had depleted to numbers that humanity had never thought the population could go down to. Some had gone into hiding while their other men and woman went to war fighting for their country, fighting for their lives. They were all dirty and filthy their clothes almost completely torn from the long hard use. Diane didn’t even remember the last time she had been able to take a bath.
Everyday they prayed, hoped that they wouldn’t need more soldiers and come and take their sons. The few that had sons lived everyday like that Diane was one of them. Praying everyday that they wouldn’t take their sons and that this war would finally be over. Her son Caleb was 13 and she knew soon enough they would come looking for more soldiers or they would die of hunger and thirst first or from the terrible conditions they were living under.
“Mommy are they going to take Caleb?” Diane’s little girl asked her, her beautiful light hazel eyes rimmed with tears.
“Of course not Aurora, I’m going to stay here with you” Caleb said kneeling down and picking her up.
They knew it was lie, but they didn’t want her to be afraid of her brother being taken away from away. He was the only father like figure she had.
Relief washed over her baby face as she held onto his dirty shirt. Caleb cooed her back and forth her eyes Diane noticed growing tired. She was so small and young to be living this kind of hell.
Everything was quiet for hours, not a sound was heard besides the wailing baby’s and the usual small talk. Diane licked her chapped dry lips hoping to moist them a bit. It had been a while since She had drunk water. But She couldn’t just go and drink it they had to ration it so that they wouldn’t run out.
“DIANE! DIANE! Were running low on food and water!” it was Cynthia she came running towards me worry clear on her face.
“What?” Diane asked shocked that couldn’t be right. She couldn’t have heard her right.
“I said we are running low on food and water!” Cynthia said slowly her eyes wide as can be.
Talk was heard through the medium sized bunker everybody worried and afraid. How could they be running low! If they had stocked up on food just last month! The underground pod wont be coming back to drop off more food and water for weeks. By than they could all be dead.
“One of us is going to have to go out there and get some more food” Diane said grabbed Cynthia’s arms, “anybody willing?” She asked her voice ringing in their ears.
People looked down. Nobody would step up they were all too afraid. Who wouldn’t be, having to go out there while a war is going on wasn’t something easy. They risked getting killed, mugged, and captured by the enemy. Never coming to see their family.
“Diane nobody is going to go” Cynthia whispered to me.
Diane looked around at most of the woman, all dirty and tired from this long war, she guessed she’ll have to be the one to go.
“I’ll go than” Diane said grabbing the riffle that laid on the dirty steel walls.
“Mom you can’t go out there” Caleb said grabbing the riffle back.
“Mommy!” Aurora cried holding her arms up for me to pick her up. Diane kneeled down to her small stature looking into her light hazel eyes that remind her of her husbands.
