I find myself rereading the article, unable to comprehend the shocking words on the screen. I dial the agency's number frantically, but no one answers, leaving me in a state of increasing panic. The walls of the room seem to close in on me, and I crumble to my knees.
My mind is a chaotic void, and my heart plummets. This can't be real, can it? I entertain the absurd thought that I might wake up from a terrible dream if I pinch my arm.
Desperate, I check the comments on the article and search for more information on Google. I even scroll through my requested DMs, hoping to find a reassuring message from the person who reached out to me previously. My tears flow when I see her silence.
She's lost faith in me, I can tell.
In a last-ditch effort, I dial a familiar number, praying that the person on the other end will pick up. A soft click and a woman's voice answer, saying my name.
"Please, you have to understand, it's not like that," I stammer, my words a jumbled mess. "I've done everything I could to change it, but they wouldn't let me. Please, I would never want that for your son..."
She cuts me off abruptly, and I swallow back my tears. My eyes dart to a sharp, silver object on my table, and a sudden itch on my wrist intensifies. "Jake, stop," she implores. "There's too much going on now, and... forget about it. I hope you have a great debut tomorrow."
