KADEN'S POV
When I walked into that Starbucks that dreaded day, all I wanted was a little bit of peace. My little brother, Scout, had just come home crying that day. He said some kid at school had bullied him. I almost told him to punch that kid in the face, but I remembered what that did to Mom and Dad. They got into a street fight late at night one day and both of them died protecting my honor. I still think it's my fault. Instead, I got down on my knees and gave Scout a big hug. I know that in my darkest moments, I always want someone to give me a hug. That's what El has always done for me. When my parents died, El took me and Scout in, giving us a place to eat and sleep until I was old enough to work at the local Chuck E Cheese as the big rat Chucky. That's why I've always loved her so much. I used to think of her as a sister when she took me in, then a best friend. Later, when she matured, I thought of her as a lover. That's why it hurt so bad when I walked into that Starbucks, ready to just pick up my no sugar white caramel mocha latte frappe with one pump raspberry, and saw a tall brunette up against El's perfect brown and strawberry blonde balayage. Walking away from the Starbucks pickup counter, I hastily walked over to them, pushing my brown hair out of my face.
"El?" I breathed. My veiny forearm reached out to touch her back, where I noticed the tall guy's hand was placed.
He is incredibly good-looking. I thought to myself. My mind clouded over with fear of what El may do to me, to us.
She turned around, looking startled to see me. Her cheeks flushed pink, her hands falling off of the gorgeous guy's chest and turning around to make eye contact with me. She pushed her blonde hair out of her eyes as she adjusted his hands upon her hips, moving them from her back so they were now around her waist as her back faced him.
"This is Aleksandr," she told me. She looked back at him, smiling as she looked into his green gray brown eyes. He smiled back, then looked at me.
"And who is this?" he asked. He had a smooth yet breathy voice, a soothing velvety deep which I had not seen in any man except for perhaps Zayn Malik himself.
"This is Kaden", she told him nonchalantly. "He's my best friend."
Aleksandr mustered a smile and stuck his hand out for me to dab him upppp.
Dope I thought.
I slapped his hand and moved it up and down again and again, pumping in the familiar motion. The moment our hands met, I felt a sort of fiery electricity spark between our fingers. Maybe it was just me. He didn't seem to notice it. His hands were soft to the touch, and his veiny forearms bulged as he grasped my hand.
I pulled my hand away and looked up at him, but he was looking back at her. I look at her, looking at him and grasping onto his arm as if his eyes were her last connection to the material world. She had never looked at me that way. I wish in these moments that my sisters were still around. They would've told me what to do. They were always the type of girls that everyone wanted to be with, with gorgeous black, shiny, flowing hair and luscious, tasty lips. After my parents died, they were the ones who kept me accountable for my schoolwork. Even after they left, I always kept myself at the top of my class, especially in Chemistry and English, my two favorite subjects. I'm also somewhat of a history buff. Some call me nerdy, but that's just the way I am. Before El took me in, they were my primary caretakers. I still remember all three of us gathered around the small kitchen island, baking strawberry blondies together. I still love baking, but I'm a little silly – the flour always gets in my hair, lol. It's so hard to get out since my hair is so fluffy. Sometimes it even gets caught in my gorgeously long, thick eyelashes teehee.
Looking at El had always reminded me of my sisters. I immediately was overcome with a pang of jealousy.
"Hey El, wanna hang at my house later today?"
El looked back at Aleksandr.
"Uh, I was actually gonna hang with Aleksandrboo-"
"Thanks for the idea Kadecne! El, we should hang out at my house later!"
She looked into his eyes and I melted a little inside.
"Maybe we can watch a movie" she whispered not so quietly. She carefully traced the extremely chiseled lines on his compression shirt.
"I–"
"It was really nice meeting you, Kaden," growled Aleksandr close to my ear.
"It–gulp–it was nice meeting you too, Aleksandr!" I said.
"Yeah pretty boy I bet it was," he whispers, pulling back to her ear. He starts subtly nibbling it, leaving me to watch awkwardly. I felt another pang of jealousy.
"Okay, bye guys," I murmured, stepping backward slowly.
"Bye, Kade-ah!" El exclaimed.
"Bye Kaden" Aleksandr growled.
PILLOWTALK by ZAYN begins to play over the speaker, leaving me walking out of the Starbucks as they continue their PDA next to the Starbucks bathrooms in the back.
"You forgot your–" yells a Starbucks worker behind me.
"Keep it," I say, walking off as I try to keep the tears from leaving the recesses of my dark brown, similarly chocolatey but not chocolatey enough, eyes.
It do be like dat.
