“He kept playing the CCTV footage and asking me questions about every detail.” Hunter shuddered, whilst throwing dagger eyes at the officer stood in the corner of the room.
“I already told you – it’s not his fault!” I spun around in outrage and yelled at the officer. The sudden movement was too much for me and I toppled over. Thankfully I grabbed the chair across from Hunter’s and managed to tumble into that without losing my dignity.
“Sorry ma’am. Protocol.” The officer shrugged from the crook.
“Protocol?” I spat as I stood up, feeling the fury roll off me in waves. “Protocol, that you had to reduce a man to this-” I thrust my hand at the pale pallor of Hunter, “-so that you can find out why your Hippocratic Oath – or whatever it’s called – was breached, when you had the damn CCTV tapes?” I seethed and stood up with such force that I knocked the chair over. I prayed beneath my breath that I wouldn’t fall as I advanced on the officer in the most intimidating manner that I could.
The officer scratched the back of his head as if he was almost a little ashamed of himself. Too bad, he was a little too late.
“Look lad, I’m sorry about earlier.” He apologized half-heartedly to Hunter. Hunter didn’t stir from his solid stance and his glare remained deadly.
“You’re sorry? You’re freaking sorry?” I yelled. I could’ve laughed at him, actually. “You have no idea what has happened to him in these past four months – no idea at all!” I shook my head, raging. The aggressive-crowd-controlling-side of me that Hunter had joked about when we first met was being unleashed, and it wasn’t pretty.
“Yeah, it seems like he’s had to put up with a lot from you.” The officer said almost sarcastically. My jaw could’ve dropped to the floor and I pulled my fist back and took aim.
“Shelby, calm it. He can do worse things to you than he did to me.” Hunter breathed coolly in my ear, but I could feel the undertones in his voice telling me that he was terrified. The worst part was I knew he was right.
“Just wait ‘til my boss hears about this...” I muttered as I squirmed free from Hunter’s restraint.
“What was that, sweetheart? We’ll keep an ear out for a call from McDonalds.” The officer gagged. I almost joined in laughing with him.
“Good one.” I congratulated him sarcastically, and began to mentally list the ways I could decapitate this officer and hide his body without anybody noticing, when a pale, short and rather sweaty man wobbled into the room. The chief.
“Officer Brady?” he said nervously, making sure to smile extra-nicely at Hunter and I. “A word outside please?”
The officer nodded wordlessly and followed the chief out of the door.
Hunter gave me a wondering look, before we both slid on our bellies and watched from the crack beneath the door.
The chief was dabbing the sheen that had spread across his forehead with a napkin and looked quite sickly.
“What is it, boss?” our Officer Brady asked the chief, who gulped and responded very lowly.
“Officer Brady, I would advise you not to make jokes like that about their boss...” the chief stuttered. Hunter shot me a look that spoke volumes – the chief had been eavesdropping on us via the cameras in the staff room.
“Their boss is in fact the multi-millionaire, Taylor Swift – she could quite realistically sue us out of existence.” The chief stammered, seeming to have trouble breathing.
Officer Brady paled and swallowed anxiously. He even seemed a bit pale himself, now.
“I’d better go finish up in there, then...” Officer Brady suggested, limply sticking his thumb in our direction. Hunter and I quickly scrambled off the floor and back to the chairs just as the door opened.
“Change of plan.” Officer Brady declared as he clapped his hands together.
“Mr. Hunter Hayes is free to go as long as he attends court on July 20th, here in Pennsylvania.”
Hunter smirked disdainfully at Officer Brady, before piping up,
“Want me to check the date with my boss?”
Officer Brady smiled helplessly, and in a moment of utter desperation he shook his head from side to side and opened the door for us.
Hah. Adios idiots.
