"Keira? What are you doing here?" Am's voice quivered with surprise. It had been nearly two years since he'd lost track of Keira after her marriage, their once-close connection fading into a blurry memory.
Keira turned, her face a mixture of emotions. Meeting Am was an unexpected jolt, and her past surged back, causing a tremor within her. She had distanced herself so far from the aftermath of what had transpired, and encountering someone from that time was entirely unanticipated. She wasn't prepared for this encounter.
Avoiding Am's question, she started to walk away, but he swiftly caught up, his grip firm on her arm. She felt a shiver run through her, but Am's determination was unwavering. He had spent a long time searching for her, and he wasn't about to let her slip away without answers.
"Am, do you know Keira?" Julia's voice interrupted their moment, drawing both their attention to her. They turned to face her, standing in front of the office belonging to the foundation of Madam Julia's family.
Am, still holding onto Keira's arm, responded with a hint of confusion, "You know her, Mom?"
Julia's gaze shifted between them, and she explained, "I know her, son. She's been serving as one of the directors of this foundation for almost a year. Haven't you been informed?" Am's mind raced to recall any discussions with his mother about appointing a new director, and he froze in realization.
"Uh, I'll head in first, ma'am, Mr. Am," Keira managed to extricate herself from Am's grasp and entered the foundation building, making her way towards her office.
Am and Julia remained outside, the tension palpable. Julia's concern for her enigmatic son was evident as she questioned, "Am, care to explain why you're here? Kelantan is quite a distance from KL. And what about Keira?"
Am shook his head, the complexity of the situation leaving him momentarily speechless.
Julia sighed, a hint of exasperation in her voice. She'd always found her son's actions a mystery, his sudden appearances even more so. "Am, what brings you here? And for how long?"
"Just on vacation. Keira, what's her role?" Am redirected the conversation, his focus now on the woman who had turned his world upside down once again.
"She's the Director of Planning and Safety. How long will you be staying? I'm heading home tomorrow!" Julia inquired, observing her son's contentedness as he fiddled with his smartphone.
"Two weeks." Am's original plans had been altered by the unexpected encounter, extending his vacation to fully delve into the situation. He texted his assistant to inform him of the change.
Julia, sensing that Am was preoccupied, relented. She turned back to her office, leaving him to his thoughts. As the office door closed, Am's mind raced. The past and present had converged, and he was determined to uncover the truths that lay hidden beneath the surface.
