*Knock knock knock.*
"Come in," Keira called out, her eyes still focused on the reports spread out in front of her. The sound of the door opening and closing and the soft footsteps reached her ears. She waited for a voice, a greeting, but none came. Eventually, she lifted her head, her eyes widening as they settled on the sight before him. A man was sprawled comfortably across the three-piece sofa in her office. In a mix of shock and curiosity, Keira rose from her seat and approached him.
"What are you doing here? How did you find my office?" Her voice was a mix of surprise and caution. Am grinned playfully, enjoying the reaction he was getting from Keira. Oh, how he missed seeing her flustered like this. Where had that fearless, teasing girl gone? What had changed in these two years to transform her character so completely?
"Am, wipe that grin off your face and answer my questions," Keira insisted, determination etched on her face. Her eyes began to narrow, but there was a certain vulnerability in them. Am got up from the sofa and settled himself on a chair, pulling Keira onto his lap. His arms wrapped around her waist, holding her snugly against him. His cheek rested against her shoulder, taking in her familiar scent, just as pleasant as it had been two years ago.
"I've missed you, Keira," Am confessed softly, his words hanging in the air. Keira froze, a mixture of emotions swirling within her. Am's embrace, though slightly unexpected, strangely felt familiar and comforting. Her body, once tense, relaxed incrementally under his touch.
"Like that, Hottie. Just like before, your body never resists my touch. Good girl, baby," he playfully teased, pressing a kiss to her earlobe. Keira, sensitive to his touch as always, couldn't help but squirm in response, a mixture of amusement and irritation evident in her expression. Am's chuckle in response was a sweet melody to her ears, a sound she had missed.
"Am, please. Let me go. Wouldn't it be quite the scandal if your mom found us like this?" Keira pleaded, her voice tinged with exasperation. Slowly, Am released his hold on her, and Keira promptly extricated herself, retreating back to her desk. Meanwhile, Am reclined back onto the sofa, closing his eyes. He was indeed tired from the drive all the way from KL to Kedah, but he believed it was entirely worth it.
"Think I'll catch a quick nap. Wake me up when you're done working, Hottie," he instructed with a smile, reaching for a pillow at the foot of her chair and hugging it close. The scent was oddly reminiscent of her, and he felt a sense of contentment settle over him.
However, Keira found it nearly impossible to focus on work with Am occupying the same space. Their shared memories flooded back, overwhelming her concentration. She stole a glance at Am, his peaceful slumber a contrast to her racing thoughts. Eventually, she decided to step away and head to the bathroom to freshen up.
Upon her return, she was met with a surprising sight. Am was seated on her desk, engrossed in her smartphone. Keira, carrying two cups of hot water, froze for a moment before regaining her composure.
"Where were you? I woke up, and you weren't there," Am questioned casually, his attention still on the smartphone. Keira approached, setting the cups on the table before standing between Am's legs. He continued to smile, not turning his head to face her.
"Hmm, no mention of a husband, no pictures of a husband or baby. No family photos at all. Everything's empty. Where's the family you built?" Am's tone shifted to seriousness, and he placed the smartphone back on the table, shifting his seat to face Keira. She found herself drawn into his gaze as he pulled her closer.
"They're gone, Am. They left me," Keira finally opened up, her voice carrying a weight of pain and vulnerability. It was the first time she had shared her past with someone. She lowered her head onto Am's shoulder, his hand gently rubbing her back. It was a simple gesture, but it infused her with a sense of strength she hadn't felt in a long time.
After a few minutes, Keira lifted her head with a faint smile, a renewed determination in her eyes. It was time to reorient herself to her present reality. Am regarded her with curiosity, a sense of intrigue reflecting in his gaze. Keira allowed their embrace to loosen slightly, taking a step back."You should head back now. There's no one left at the foundation. I need to finish up some work and head home right after," Keira gently guided Am's hand away from her waist. She settled back into her chair, resuming her work with renewed focus.
"I'll drive you back. Finish up your work quickly," Am stated, reaching for the cup of hot water Keira had prepared earlier. He took a seat across from her desk, engaged in Keira's smartphone. As Keira immersed herself in her tasks, she couldn't shake off the memories and emotions that Am's presence had stirred within her. She knew that confronting her past would be a challenge, but perhaps, with Am by her side, she could finally find the closure and strength she had been seeking all this time.
