"But I don't want you to go, Dad," I'd said quietly, tears rolling down my face. I didn't know where he was going, and I didn't know why. All I knew was that I didn't want him to leave. I barely knew him. I was only six after all.
"I'm sorry, Mist. I have to go. There's something I have to do." He smiled weakly.
"Please. I don't want you to..." I pleaded with him, but it didn't change his mind.
"I'll be back before you know it," he said as he knelt down to meet my eyes.
The expression on his face was so filled with mixed emotion that I couldn't tell what he was feeling, which made me worried for him. I could always tell, but not this time.
He smiled again, a sort of pain in his eyes. I hugged him tightly, tears rolling down my cheeks. I opened my mouth to speak, but no words came out. He was leaving me, and there was nothing I could do to make him stay.
He held me back from him to look at me again before he left. A single tear fell from his eye as he stood and turned away. I stood there, hoping that he would change his mind and stay with me, but deep down I knew that was impossible. He stepped into what looked like an ordinary blue police box like you see on the street corners and whispered something that sounded like, "Goodbye," but it sounded broken.
After he closed the door and that old familiar sound started, I fell to my knees. I stayed there for a good fifteen minutes, waiting for him to come back.
That was when I realized something: he wasn't coming back.
