"Yeah, what did you see? What's Flow's mind like?" Owl asked, his talons quivering excitedly

"Yeah, what did you see? What's Flow's mind like?" Owl asked, his talons quivering excitedly.

"Nothing. All she saw was me. It was a memory." Shadow murmured. Flow was awkwardly scrambling to her feet, her eyes cloudy and confused.

Fox's wings flicked. "I don't see why the NightWings get all the cool powers." He huffed.

Shadow slinked back, feeling ashamed. "You aren't scared of me?"

"Of course not!" Sahara stood proudly beside her Clawmate.

Shadowsong held his head high. Her praise was uplifting. "We can talk more in the morning," he told his Winglet. "I'm going to bed."

As the Sunstone Winglet went their separate ways, Shadowsong looked back at Sahara. "I'm sorry I didn't tell you earlier." He whispered before walking to his own room.

Shadowsong couldn't sleep. It had been maybe hours since he had told his Winglet about his powers, and he couldn't sleep.

He heard Sahara snoring from the cave beside him. He could hear dragonets pattering in the halls to get to their classes early.

And so he did what he always did when he was utterly bored back in the rainforest.

Sahara.

Shadow covered his face with his wings as his vision went dark, and he was back in the desert.

He squinted against the scorching sunlight, looking for Sahara.

Something barreled into him from behind and Shadow let out a shocked yelp. He turned, seeing the sandy-yellow scales of his Clawmate.

But something was off.

"Sahara?" He trailed off as the dragon that looked identical to his Clawmate glared at him.

What seemed to be Sahara's inner thoughts rang around Shadowsong like a heatwave.

"Come on, Sahara." They sneered. "There's no way he likes you back."

What?

"It can't be true. A SandWing and a NightWing? It just isn't done." The voices seemed to split into many as they circled around Shadow.

The bright blue sky melted away and left darkness. This wasn't a dream, this was a nightmare. The sky turned a blood red and Shadow's gaze flitted around to find and escape.

The voices rang again, chanting over and over the same thing.

"Not true, not true. You cannot be in love with a NightWing."

His mouth went dry as Sahara woke up. Shadow found himself back in his bed, surrounded by leafy green plants.

"That was nearly as bad as Mother's mind." Shadowsong shivered.

Sahara's yelp of pain came from the other room. Despite being frozen with fear and shock, Shadowsong raced towards her.

"Are you okay?" He asked, his voice cracking. "I heard you scream-"

Sahara cut him off with an embarrassed laugh. "I'm fine, I'm fine. You can go back to your room."

I can tell why she's jittery.

She loves me.
