Ashton's P.O.V.

I walked into school with my head down, causing my hair to fall into my eyes. That reminded me - I needed to get a haircut. I reached my locker, just jiggling the handle to get it open; the lock was broken.

As I pulled on the handle, I noticed writing on the locker door. Someone had written 'Vampire Boy' in black marker on it. Finally getting my locker open, plastic bats you might find in Halloween stores fell out, causing nearby students to burst into laughter.

Sighing, I grabbed my books and pushed them into my bag before grapping the cleanser wipes I kept in my locker. Pulling them out, I shut my locker and began to wipe off the rude words. Just because I wore dark clothes and my hair was black doesn't mean Im a vampire.

Yes, my mother was a vampire, and my father a werewolf, making me a hybrid. But, that doesn't qualify me a freak. That doesn't make me a bad person. They were mates, it was fate they met.

I sighed again, forcing my locker open once more and putting the wipes back in. Life was hard enough without the people at school. Life was hard enough without people at all.

I played with the ends of my sleeves and began walking to class when the most delectable scent wafted through the air. I took a deep inhale through my nose stopping right outside my classroom door. The scent was coming from the inside of the room.

I felt my wolf become fidgety in my mind and I blocked him out. I knew what was happening. I was about to find my mate. No. Not today.

I took a deep breath and walked into class just as the bell rang. The teacher was not yet here, and I calmed down a bit. I wasn't late. Then I heard the class grow quiet as I walked past them.

Walking to my seat, the scent grew stronger. My mate smelled like the forest and the fresh ocean breeze. With a faint hint of fruit. I felt a feeling of want swarm in my mind, clouding my thoughts as I took my seat.

Sitting down, I felt a pair of eyes on me. I didnt dare look up, knowing my mate was the one looking at me. I didnt want to know who they were. I just moved here four months ago, I didnt want a mate now.

I played with my fingers as I felt all eyes on me, everyone breaking out in whispers. I felt a ball of paper hit the side of my head and fall onto my desk, quiet snickering following suit.

I opened the paper slowly, my fingers shaking. Freak. Loser. No one likes you. Just kill yourself already. The note had me on the verge of tears. I stood up and walked out of the room slowly, the note balled up in my hand.

Once I was out of the room, I ran to the bathroom, tears flooding down my cheeks. I threw my bag across the bathroom and let go of the note, letting it drop to the floor. I ran into the stall in the furthest corner of the bathroom, dropping down next to the toilet.

I cried hard, pulling the pencil sharpener from my pocket. The blade used for sharpening was already loose, and I pulled it right off. I pulled up my sleeves, revealing my previous scars.

I slashed the blade down my wrist horizontally ten times, letting the blood drip into the toilet bowl. I felt the tears on my cheeks dry as I lost all will to keep crying. Thats when I heard the creak of the bathroom door opening and the scent of my mate following the sound.

I froze up, my breath getting caught in my throat. I heard heavy footsteps coming closer and closer to the stall I laid in. Whoever my mate was, I didn't want them to see me like this.

Then the stall door opened and I closed my eyes as I heard a growl resonate across the bathroom walls. I felt the scent envelope me as strong arms picked me up fiercely. They tore the blade out of my hand and I heard it hit the floor across the bathroom.

I opened my teary eyes slightly to meet the angry ones of Lukas James. The pack Beta. No, why him? Why someone so important? I tried pushing him away and he held onto me tighter sitting on the floor with me on his lap.

"Let go of me." I whimpered weakly and teared up. His eyes softened and looked into mine loosening his grip on me enough not to hurt me but still holding me tight enough I couldn't get away.

"Ashton," Lukas said softly placing his hand on my cheek. That one soft touch sent sparks flying across my cheek and through my body. Looking up into his hazel brown eyes, I felt captivated. I felt his hand grab mine gently and he pulled my wrist to his lips, kissing each scar and slash slowly and gently.

"Why did you do this to yourself? What did that note say?" He whispered softly to me, his face showing signs of worry. My eyes flickered to the note that was only a few feet away. Not trusting my voice, I reached over and grabbed the crumpled paper and handed it to him shakily.

He let go of my hand to grab it, the other arm wrapping around my middle and his hand resting on my hip as he read it. His grip tightened and he began to shake with anger and he finished reading it.

His eyes flashed gold, a sign his wolf was showing. I started to pull away and shiver with fear. "D-don't hurt me." I choked out weakly, my eyes filling with tears. He sighed and took deep breaths and began stroking my cheek gently.

"Ashton, no one will hurt you. Ever, Im here to protect you. You may be different than what I expected, and you may be male, but you're my mate. And I accept you." He told me gently caressing my cheek.

I felt my wolf purr and I visibly relaxed slightly. He smiled at me and picked me up as he stood tall. He grabbed my bag and threw the note away, carrying me out of the bathroom. "You're safe now Ashton. You're safe." He told me as I fell asleep in his arms surrounded by his warmth.
