Chapter 9—
MONDAY
ME AND BELLA WALKED OUT OF THE HOUSE AS DAD PULLED UP in Bella's truck but as we stepped onto the pavement Bella trippedShe let off a grunt as she fell and I quickly reached down to help her up, dad rushing over to do the same
"you all right?" Dad asked her
"Yeah. ice doesn't really help the uncoordinated" I dusted off a bit of dirt from her jacket
"yeah. That's why I had some new tires put on the truck. Old ones were getting pretty bald. Well, i'll probably be late for dinner. I gotta head down to Mason County. security guard at Grisham Mill got killed by some kind of animal" dad started making his way over to his car but that surprised me
"An animal?" I asked
"You guys aren't in Phoenix anymore. Anyway, I figured I'd lend a hand"
"Be careful" Bella told him and I nodded agreeing with her
"I always am"
"Thanks for the tyres" dad nodded once more, muttering an awkward 'yeah' before he got back in his car and me and Bella did the same
-
"Prom committee is a chick thing" Eric rambled to me and Bella as we walked into our biology lesson
"But I gotta cover it for the paper anyway and they need a guy to help choose the music, so I need your playlist. Hey listen, Athena. I was wondering , did you have a date to-" thankfully just in the nick of time Mike walked over to me and Bella, shaking his wet hat over our heads"What's up Arizona's? Huh?" I looked to Bella, my cheeks puffed out in relief which she snickered at
It wasn't like I didn't like Eric. If anything he has made me feel very welcome here, it's just I didn't see him in anymore as a friend and I didn't really want to be put in a position where I would have to turn him down
