"I can't believe you two managed to get yourselves detention for something so small." Emmie's older brother was saying.

He had come to pick them up since neither of the girls parents could make it. Elaine's dad was at work and Emmie's was busy at his bakery. Her mom was never around that often.

"What did you two even do all afternoon?" he asked.

"What were we supposed to do?" Emmie snapped, arms crossed in the back seat. She was pouting.

Her and Thomas had what you could call a competitive dynamic. Emmie always tried to be better than her brother, and somehow never managed, then got upset. It was a cycle Elaine had gotten used to.

"Aren't you two like model students?" Thomas mocked. "I bet you actually did what they told you to."

"No we didn't." Emmie said defensively.

Thomas shook his head. "Whatever you say Weirdo."

Then he looked over at Elaine in the rear view mirror. "Midget," he said.

That was his charming nickname for her.

She frowned. "What is it?"

"Does your dad know?" he asked.

Elaine shook her head. "I think I'm gonna tell him when I get home."

"Why?" Emmie whipped her head over to look at her. "I'm not telling."

"Well Midget is a good kid, unlike you." Thomas commented.

Emmie stuck his tongue out at him, before turning her attention back to Elaine.

"He won't be mad," Elaine said. "Nothing like this has ever happened before, he says every kid should skip class at least once."

Thomas laughed in the driver's seat. "I like that thinking," he said. "Sadly this isn't the first time I've had to drive the Weirdo home."

Suddenly Emmie switched all her focus to her brother. "If you tell him, or Mom, I'll kill you."

"Good luck with that."

"Why are you even here, weren't you at your little fraternity just last night?" she asked, trying to switch the attention away from her.

"No, I was on a plane last night," Thomas said in a very matter-a-fact way. "A plane to Silver Springs."

"Too bad it didn't crash." Emmie muttered under her breath.

Elaine knew she didn't mean it. Her brother meant the world to her, they were just a little too similar for their own good.

"Where do you two want me to drop you off?" Thomas suddenly asked, he was turning into his and Emmie's neighborhood.

"Is Mom home?" Emmie asked.

He nodded.

"Go to Elaine's place then, you have the new address right?" she asked.

"Sure do," Thomas said."Off to Midget's house."

"Stop calling her that!" Emmie protested.

Thomas just smiled.

In no time his car was parked in front of Elaine's new house. Her dad was off at work and wouldn't be home for a few hours.

"Thanks Thomas." Elaine said, getting out.

"Don't thank him," Emmie said, fake-hitting her arm. "His ego's big enough."

Thomas' eyes widened in fake shock. "I'm appalled at how little you think of me," he said. "At least I'll have a fun story for Mom."

Emmie was about to yell at him, but he sped off before she had the chance.
